NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut beat Mercy College, 84-57, in a non-conference matchup in New Haven, Conn. on Dec. 29, 2022. With the win, the Owls improve to 8-4 on the season and Mercy drops to 2-10 overall. The Owls are now on a five game winning streak. This has been the longest winning steak since the 2018-19 season.
Sean James (West Hartford, Conn.) dropped a personal-best 22 points in the win, going 6-of-10 from the three-point line. James scored 17 of his 22 points in the first half alone, including all of his three-pointers. Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) recorded his first double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and picking up 12 rebounds. Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) had a team-best eight assists and tabbed five points. Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) scored 19 points and picked up five rebounds. Leo Chaikin (South Hero, Vt.) recorded nine points and took down four rebounds.
In the first four minutes, the Owls jumped to a 10 point lead over the Mavericks. Ten minutes in, the Owls increased their lead to a 16 point advantage. With two minutes remaining in the half, the Owls created the largest lead of the half of 21 points over the Mavericks. Sean James came up big with 17 points to lead Southern Connecticut. Zach Penn recorded eight points in the half and also tallied four rebounds. Ulyen Coleman notched seven points, and two assists. The score read 44-25 after the first 20 minutes.
Southern Connecticut did not shy from slowing the pace of their scoring in the second half. The Owls took their largest lead at the midway point of the half off a free throw by Ulyen Coleman. Southern boosted their lead to 31 points over Mercy, 65-34. James finished up his scoring with five more points to total with 22. Ulyen scored 12 more points in the second half, to finish with 19. At the conclusion of the game, the Owls remained on top, 84-57.
