Connors, Amalbert Lead SCSU Women's Basketball To 82-66 Win At Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball seniors Delaney Connors and Zoe Amalbert combined for more than half of the Owls' points in an 82-66 Northeast 10 Conference win at Adelphi in Garden City, N.Y. The Owls improved to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the NE10 while Adelphi dropped to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

The Owls' senior duo combined for 43 points, with Connors totaling a team-leading 23 points and Amalbert pouring in a season-best 20. Connors had her top game of the season as she filled the box score with eight assists, six rebounds and two steals while shooting 9-for-16 from the floor, including a 4-for-7 showing from three-point range to go-along with her season-best point total. Amalbert's 20 points are also a season-high and accompanied her nine rebounds and four assists. Amalbert knocked down four three-pointers as well, and converted on 8-of-10 free throw attempts for the game.

In addition to Connors and Amalbert, fifth-year transfer Isabella Santoro tagged Adelphi for a season-best 15 points while double-double threat Katie Williamson scoring nine points with nine rebounds.

Southern opened the game with a 10-0 run and pushed its lead to 16-4 with Williamson (6) and Connors (5) combining for 11 of Southern's 16 points. Southern held Adelphi from reaching double digits for the first 9:23 of the game and took a 28-10 lead into the first intermission. The Owls' 18-point edge proved to be the difference in the game. Connors had 10 first quarter points while Santoro contributed nine. Southern hit a blistering 11-for-18 from the floor for the quarter.

The second quarter saw a closer battle as Southern outscored the Panthers, 20-16, as Connors and Amalbert scoring eight apiece before the break. The Owls went into halftime with a 22-point lead, 48-26. Adelphi actually outscored Southern in the second half, 40-35, but it was the Owls' 22-point halftime lead  that helped them keep the Panthers at arm's length. The Owls pushed its lead to as many as 27 points in the game, doing so with 37 seconds remaining the third quarter. In the fourth, Adelphi outscored Southern, 25-15, but Southern held on for the win.

Southern's win against Adelphi ended a five-game skid against the Panthers dating back to 2018. It was also Southern's first win in Garden City since Dec. 2, 2017. For Connors, it was actually the second-most points she has scored in her SCSU career after potting 29 against Adelphi last season. Her four three-pointers match her career-best. Amalbert's nine rebounds were a career-high while her point total was the second-highest of her career.

The Owls return to action on Saturday, Dec. 10 when it hosts College of Saint Rose for a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at 1:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
