Women's Basketball Edges Saint Michael's in Overtime

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Southern Connecticut women's hoops team edged Saint Michael's College in overtime, 67-53, at the Ross Sports Center. With the win, the Owls improved to 10-11 overall and 7-8 in the Northeast 10, while the Purple Knights fell to 4-17 overall and 2-14 in the NE10.

The Owls were paced by junior Alexa Kellner (Stamford, Conn.) who had a game-high 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting from three-point range. Kellner also grabbed six boards, a steal and a block. Senior Zoë Amalbert (Nanuet, N.Y.) had 16 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals, while graduate student Jessica Fressle had 13 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks, and two steals.

How It Happened

  • After Zoë Amalbert picked up the first basket of the game, Saint Michael's responded with a 7-0 run. Both sides traded baskets over the next three minutes, with the Purple Knights still leading by four, 14-10. With 2:38 to play, the Purple Knights took a nine-point lead, their largest lead of the quarter, off a pair of free throws. Southern responded quickly and capped the quarter on a 9-0 run, thanks to five crucial points from Amalbert, that tied the game, 19-19. Amalbert grabbed nine of the Owls' 19 points in the quarter.
  • The Owls took the lead for the first time since the opening shot when Alexa Kellner drained a three 32 seconds into the second quarter. Saint Michael's guard Paige Slaven picked up three points to tie the game back up, 22-22. Southern responded with a basket from Patricia Conroy (Staten Island, N.Y.) and then back-to-back layups from Delaney Connors (West Hartford, Conn.) that gave them a five-point lead. A 6-0 run was Purple Knights response, which gave them them the lead once again, 29-28, with just over two minutes to play. The final two minutes of action saw the lead change three times with the Owls coming on top by one after a Jessica Fressle basket with six seconds until the half. 
  • Out of the locker room, the Owls started the quarter with a 6-2 run and led by five points. Saint Michael's picked up three-straight three-pointers to regain the lead, 43-39. At the 2:25 mark, Kellner drained a three to cut the Purple Knights lead to one. Saint Michael's grabbed a basket on the next possession to extend their lead to three. The Owls then scored the final five points with under a minute to play off a pair of free throws from Conroy and yet another three-pointer from Kellner, 47-45 Southern. 
  • Saint Michael's grabbed two quick baskets at the beginning of the final frame to change the lead in their favor once again, 50-47. Connors cut the Purple Knights lead to one before Saint Michael's extended it to four with a three-pointer at the 4:24 mark. The Owls came back to tie it off baskets from Connors and Fressle, 53-53. The final minute and a half was scoreless with both sides falling short of scoring, sending the game into overtime.
  • Southern was unstoppable in the overtime period, outscoring the Purple Knights, 14-0. The Owls kicked off extra time with two three-pointers in back-to-back possessions from Amalbert and Kellner. A basket from Fressle with 1:58 and then a quartet of free throws from Amalbert and Conroy extended Southern's lead to 12 before Kellner capped the run and the game with a jumper with 25 seconds to play. The Owls surge in extra time sealed the road victory.

Notes

  • The last time Southern beat Saint Michael's on the road was on Dec. 2, 2006 when the Owls took the victory, 71-51.
  • This was Southern's second overtime win of the season.
  • Jessica Fressle notched her 12th double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds. 
  • Fressle topped a career-high in blocks with four against Saint Michael's. Her previous career-marker was two blocks against Adelphi on Feb. 25, 2020.
  • Alexa Kellner recorded a season-high 17 points.
  • Zoë Amalbert has at least five assists in 15 games this season.
