How It Happened

  • Southern grabbed the first basket of the night off a Zoë Amalbert three-pointer, before New Haven responded with back-to-back threes of their own. From there, New Haven went on an 11-5 run midway through the quarter to take a seven-point lead, 17-10. The Owls finished the frame on a 10-6 run, but still trailed by three.
  • Katie Williamson (Dublin, Ireland) kicked off the second quarter with a basket for the Owls, but the Charger offense continued to heat up with a 7-1 run that gave them a seven-point lead, 30-23. The scoring evened out on both sides as New Haven narrowly outscored Southern, 9-7, but the Chargers took a nine-point lead into halftime.
  • New Haven came out of the locker room and started the quarter on an 8-3 run. With 3:59 to play in the frame, the Chargers had a 17-point lead, their largest of the game. Southern heated up with an 11-0 run in the remaining four minutes, ignited by Alexa Kellner, who led the way with three of the Owls' four baskets. Southern trailed by six heading into the final quarter of action.
  • The Owls picked up where the left off with an 8-2 run to start the fourth quarter and tied the game, 57-57. New Haven went on a 6-0 run, regaining the lead. Despite the Chargers narrowly outscoring, 8-6, in the remaining three minutes, New Haven's strong push midway through was the difference maker as they went on to win by eight points.
