Women's Basketball Takes Down Saint Rose

ALBANY, N.Y. - Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated The College of Saint Rose, 55-46, at Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. With the win, the Owls improved to 11-12 overall and 8-9 in the Northeast 10, while the Golden Knights fell to 4-16 overall and 3-13 in the NE10.

The Owls were led by graduate student Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.), who had a double-double of 22 points and 15 rebounds along with three steals. Senior Zoë Amalbert (Nanuet, N.Y.) registered 15 points, four assists, and a steal, while senior Delaney Connors (West Hartford, Conn.) had nine points, grabbed four boards, two assists, and a steal.

How It Happened

  • First quarter started off slow as neither team scored until Saint Rose got on the board with back-to-back baskets at the 6:19 mark. Southern rattled off five-straight unanswered points. The Owls finished off the first ten minutes of play by outscoring the Golden Knights, 7-4, and led by four. Fressle had eight of the Owls 12 points and grabbed six rebounds in the first quarter.
  • Southern ignited for a 9-0 run to start the second quarter with five points from graduate student Patricia Conroy (Staten Island, N.Y.). Saint Rose grabbed two free throws before the Owls grabbed six unanswered points and took a 17-point lead. The blue and white went into halftime with a 16 point lead over Saint Rose. 
  • Saint Rose found a groove out of the locker room and began the third quarter on a 8-0 run to cut the Owls lead to eight points. After Fressle grabbed four points to extend back to double-digits, Saint Rose snagged a 6-2 run that brought the Owls lead back down to eight. Both sides grabbed two baskets each to finish out the final minute and a half of play as the Owls led by nine.
  • The Golden Knights continued to knock on the door, but the Owls continued to answer. The final frame of action saw both sides trading baskets. Southern started the quarter outscoring Saint Rose, 9-4, and taking a 14-point lead. At the 5:10 mark of the quarter, Saint Rose went on a 7-3 scoring run to bring the Owls lead down to 10. Fressle picked up a basket, before the Golden Knights grabbed five-straight points with two minutes to go, 53-46 Owls. Amalbert capped the game with two free throws as the Owls went on to win it by nine on the road.

  • Jessica Fressle recorded her 14th double-double of the season with 22 points and 15 rebounds.
  • Zoë Amalbert has at least three assists in 22 of her 23 games this season.
  • Patricia Conroy recorded a career-high nine rebounds against Saint Rose. Her previous career-high of six rebounds was set against Saint Michael's on Feb. 14. 
  • Southern has captured the last nine meetings against Saint Rose dating back to Feb. 11, 2017.
