SCSU Baseball Rolls To 20-6 Win Against Dominican

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Southern Connecticut baseball won their third-straight game to open the 2022 season with a 20-6 win against Dominican (N.Y.) in a non-conference match-up at The Ripken Experience's Ebbets Field in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Owls are now 3-0 on the young season while the Chargers open the year at 0-1.

Tyshaun Diaz (Holyoke, Mass.)  was 3-for-6 with a career-best six RBI with two doubles, while Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, four RBI and two runs scored. Jack Drewry (Wolcott, Conn.) drove in two runs and scored three more while Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Chad Fedeli (Monroe, Conn.) came off the bench to go 2-for-3 with a RBI. Izaiah Walker also drove in two runs and scored three more.

On the mound, Nick Guarino (East Haven, Conn.), a graduate transfer from Clark University, improved to 2-0 on the season after giving up four runs, only one of which was earned, on eight hits over seven innings while striking out five. Patrick Webler (Brookline, Mass.) pitched the final two innings in relief, scattering two hits with two strikeouts and giving two unearned runs.

Southern scored a majority of its runs over the game's first three innings, plating seven in the top of the 1st before scoring five runs in the 2nd and 3rd, respectively. The Owls' first was keyed by a two-run single by Goggin followed by a pair of two-RBI doubles from Ferrett and Diaz. In the 2nd, it was Drewry stroked a one-run double, followed by Ferrett who plated two more runs with is second double of the day. Diaz then lined one down the line to bring home two more runners.

In the sixth, Bill Sullivan started the Owls rally with a two-out single before scoring on a single by Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.). Goggin then found the gap and legged out a triple to bring Eng home before Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) drove Goggin in.

On the mound, Guarino should have been out of the inning, but with two outs and a runner on due to an error, Dominican strung together three-straight hits to push across three runs. A Dominican home run in the 3rd was the only earned run allowed by Guarino for the afternoon. It was another error in the bottom of the 9th that allowed the Chargers to score twice on Webler.
