MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team lost to Saint Anselm, 84-65 in the First Round of the Northeast 10 Conference Tournament at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2022. The Owls finish with a final record of 7-18 overall, while Saint Anslem improves to 16-9.
C.J. Seaforth (Hamden, Conn.) scored 18 points to lead Southern and went 7-for-8 from the free throw line.
Lyron Bennett (Boston, Mass.) scored 12 points and recorded five rebounds and three assists, while
Jamaal Waters (Hartford, Conn.) scored 11 points. Off the bench,
Sean James (West Hartford, Conn.) scored eight points and made two three-pointers.
How It Happened
First Half
- Saint Anselm started off quickly, and held a 16-7 lead after nine minutes of play. Southern went on an 11-3 run to cut the score to 19-18 with 8:09 remaining in the half. Seaforth scored six of Southern's points, which included a three-pointer to cap off the run.
- After a made three-pointer by Saint Anselm and a layup by Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.), Saint Anselm went on a 10-0 run to take a 12-point lead. Seaforth stopped the run with a made layup, but the Hawks then outscored Southern 11-2 to take a 43-24 lead.
- Seaforth scored 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting in the first half to lead Southern.
Second Half
- A 10-2 run early in the second half cut the Hawks' score down to 49-36 with 13:50 to play. Waters scored on a layup and converted the and-one opportunity to highlight the run, while Bennett added four points.
- James then scored Southern's next eight points, and made both of his three-point attempts over the next three-minutes, as both teams exchanged baskets over the latter part of the half. Southern was able to cut the lead down to 60-48 with just under eight minutes remaining.
- Saint Anselm was able to pull away late thanks to a 24-10 run. Southern scored the game's last seven points before the final buzzer.

- Seaforth ended his collegiate career with 1,032 points, with 986 coming at Southern.
- In his career, Seaforth averaged 21.2 points in five games against Saint Anselm, and scored 64 points in three games at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. He scored 43 points in two games against Saint Anselm during the NE10 Tournament.
- Bennett reached double-figures in points in 18 of his 25 games played this season.
- In four of his six games played this year, James made at least two three-pointers.
- Waters averaged 8.1 points per game after being inserted into the starting lineup for the final eight games of the season, and scored at least 10 points three times.
