SCSU Baseball Tops Chestnut Hill, 12-10

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Southern Connecticut baseball wrapped-up its trip to The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. with a 12-10 win against Chestnut Hill University. The Owls win puts them a perfect 6-0 while Chestnut Hill goes to 1-3 on the season.

Mike DeMartino was 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI. DeMartino's two doubles give him 48 for his career, which move him past Joe Sorrentino '96 and Jason Oliverio '00 (47) into fourth place all-time. He now trails Marco Vitiello's 58 doubles for his career for third place all-time. Jack Drewry was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his first of the season.

On the mound, Alec Erskine picked up his first career win after coming on in relief and hurling 4 1/3 innings while allowing four runs on five hits.

After a first-inning home run by Chestnut Hill, the Owls responded in the bottom half of the inning when Andrew Eng drove in Zach Bedryczuk with a sacrifice fly to right field to tie the game. Chestnut Hill responded with two runs in the second inning before Southern answered with three runs of their own. Both Bedryczuk and Bill Sullivan scored on wild pitches to tie the game before DeMartino doubled to drive in Eng to give the Owls a 4-3 lead.

Chestnut Hill regained the lead with a three-run third inning to pull-ahead, 6-4. Erskine entered the game in the fourth inning with the bases loaded and two outs before striking out the last batter in the inning.

With momentum shifting, Southern posted a seven-run bottom of the fourth. After Bedryczuk flew out to lead-off the inning, Sullivan worked a walk before moving to third on a double by Eng. Connor Goggin's groundball to short was misplayed, allowing Sullivan to score and Eng to move to third before DeMartino doubled both runners home to give the Owls a 7-6 lead. Drewry then connected for his first dinger of the year, scoring DeMartino to give Southern a 9-6 lead.

After David Christoforo delivered his third double in two days, Zach Nakonechny and Chad Fedeli walked walked, followed by another walk by Bedryczuk to force Nakonechny home and give the Owls a 11-6 lead.

Chestnut Hill refused to go away, pushing four runs across in its next-at bat, highlighted by a base-clearing double by Chris Evans. After the fifth, Erskine settled in, allowing just two baserunners over his final four innings while Southern tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Nakonechny drove in Christoforo to make it 12-10. Pete Phillips pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up the save for the Owls.

The Owls are slated to open play at The Ballpark at SCSU on Saturday, Mar. 5 against Mercy College for a doubleheader at 12 PM before traveling to Mercy on Sunday, Mar. 6 for two more.
