Women's Basketball Falls to American International

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut women's basketball team fell to American International College, 70-59, at Moore Field House. With the loss, the Owls moved to 7-10 overall and 4-7 in the Northeast 10, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 9-9 overall and 6-6 in the NE10.

Senior Delaney Connors (West Hartford, Conn.) led the Owls with 17 points, while graduate student Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) picked up 15 points and 18 rebounds along with four assists. Graduate student Patricia Conroy (Staten Island, N.Y.) had 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range.

How It Happened
  • AIC jumped out to a 10-0 start through the first two and a half minutes. The Yellow Jackets narrowly outscored the Owls, 11-8, over the remaining minutes of the first.
  • Southern's offense rattled off a 9-2 run to start the second frame and come within three of AIC's lead. Both sides battled back and forth in the latter half of the quarter with Delaney Haines sinking two timely three-pointers. Southern went into halftime down by one.
  • Coming out of the half, Southern took the lead on a Conroy three-pointer, 31-29, and traded hoops with AIC when Connors layup made it 33-32 for the Owls. AIC then outscored Southern, 16-6, over the next two minutes to take a 48-37 lead with two minutes to go in the quarter. AIC closed the third with a 52-41 lead. 
  • Southern and AIC played even over the final 10 minutes, playing to a 18-18 tally in the fourth. Conroy (6) and Connors (4) led the Owls who shot 7-of-12 down the stretch but couldn't overcome the Yellow Jackets' lead.   
Notes
  • Jessica Fressle tied a career-high in rebounds with 18 against AIC. Her career-high was originally set on Nov. 28, 2021 against Holy Family.
  • Fressle's double-double is her fourth in her last five games and the ninth of the season and is averaging 15.8 points and 12 rebounds per game in her last five games. 
  • Patricia Conroy tied a career-high in three-pointers made with four against AIC, matching her effort on Jan. 19 against Franklin Pierce. Conroy is 6-for-13 (46.2%) over her last two games and 11-for-23 (47.8%) from long range over her last four games. 
  • Delaney Haines has found her way into the Owls' rotation over the last four games, logging 20 minutes in each. Haines has hit a pair of three-pointers in each game and is averaging 9.6 points per contest over the Owls' last four contests.  
  • Zoë Amalbert has 12 games with at least five assists and four games with at least 10 assists.

The Owls will play their third game in four days when they host Saint Anselm College on Sunday, Feb. 6. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
