Softball Tops Dominican Behind Perucki's Gem, Dumont Home Run

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Southern Connecticut softball picked up its first win of the season with a 3-1 victory against Dominican at The Spring Games at the Winter Haven DiamondPlex in Winter Haven, Fla. With the win, the Owls go to 1-1 on the year while Dominican drops to 2-2.

Jessica Perucki was dominant in her first start of the season, holding the Chargers to two hits while giving up one unearned run while striking out four in a complete game victory. Perucki walked the first batter of the game, who came around to score Dominican's only run, on an error.

Perucki allowed just one baserunner over the next three innings, taking a no-hitter into the fifth. After a lead-off single in the fifth, Dominican threatened but the Owls executed a textbook run-down between third and home for the final out of the inning to escape unscathed.

It was the top half of that inning that saw the Owls score their first runs of the season and also take a lead that they wouldn't give up. Ally Petrella worked a six-pitch walk to put the tying run on base. After Emily Lange was retired, Jacqueline Dumont blasted her first home run of the season, a line drive that cleared the center field fence to give the Owls a 2-1 lead.

After Perucki followed with a base hit, freshman Madelyn Sauve pinch ran for her collegiate debut. Katrina Roy hit a ground ball to second base that was misplayed, and then beat the rushed throw to first to put two runners on. Southern moved both runners into scoring position when Roy baited a throw down to first, allowing Sauve to bolt to third. Paige Delier then hit a deep fly to center field to drive in Sauve and give the Owls a 3-1 lead.

Perucki cruised through the end of the game, retiring the side in order in the sixth before sitting down the game-tying run after a two-out single in the seventh.
Southern is back in action on Tuesday, Mar. 15 in Winter Haven when they face Felician at 2:30 p.m. followed by University of Minnesota-Crookston at 4:45 p.m.
