Softball Falls To Minnesota-Crookston

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Southern Connecticut softball dropped the second game of their second afternoon at The Spring Games, falling to Minnesota-Crookston, 9-1. With the loss, Southern drops to 2-2 while Minnesota-Crookston improves to 8-11.

First-year Owl Madelyn Sauve tripled in her first career at-bat, scoring Dominique DeLutri with the Owls' only run. Trailing 8-0 in the top of the fifth inning, Sauve entered the game as a pinch hitter for Angela Barresi and worked a full count. Sauve fouled off a pitch then turned on a belt-high pitch, banging it off the top of the fence and missing a home run by inches. DeLutri reached on a single in her previous at-bat and scored from first on the play.

Emma Gorham took the loss in her first career start for the Owls. The Owls' freshman was tagged for eight runs, seven earned, on 10 hits over three innings. Freshman Madison Shura came on in relief, scattering three hits over 1 1/3 innings in relief, but ultimately giving up the rule to force the Mercy Rule. Shura recorded two strikeouts.

The Owls are idle on Wednesday, Mar. 16 and return to action on Thursday, Mar. 17 against St. Thomas Aquinas and Indiana (Pa.). The Owls wrap-up their trip in Winter Haven against Caldwell and Purdue-Northwest on Friday, Mar. 18.
