Baseball Falls To Lynn

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Southern Connecticut baseball lost to Lynn, 10-1, in a non-conference game played in Boca Raton, Fla. With the loss, Southern goes to 11-2 overall while Lynn improves to 17-7.

Billy Sullivan was 2-for-4 for the Owls while Mike DeMartino was 2-for-3 with a RBI, scoring Andrew Eng with the Owls only run. Alec Erskine took the hard-luck to drop to 1-1 on the year after allowing three runs – only two of which were earned – on nine hits over five innings. Tyshaun Diaz and Tony Zambito also had a hit for the Owls.

Lynn got on the board in the second inning, scoring on an unearned run after an error extended the inning. Southern tied the game in the fourth when Sullivan singled to lead off the inning before being putout at second as Eng reached on a fielder's choice. Connor Goggin moved Eng over to second before DeMartino's single to center field score Eng and tied the game at 1-1.

In the sixth, Erskine gave up a single and double to start the inning before hitting a batter to load the bases. He then gave up two more hits to push across two runs and give Lynn a 3-1 lead. Spencer Fox relieved Erskine and retired the side in order. In the seventh, Fox walked the first three batters before giving up a grand slam to Lynn's Daniel Alfonzo, who was 4-for-6 with two home runs.

After an error allowed another runner to reach, Fox retired the next batter for the second out before walking the next batter. John Bucci then entered the game and gave up back-to-back singles to allow two more runs to score. Alfonzo added his second home run of the game in the eighth to make it 10-1.

Southern is back in action on Friday, Mar. 18 when it faces Post University at 10:30 a.m. and Bentley at 2 p.m. at Santaluces Sports Complex.
