Martinez Blanks IUP, Owls Win 4-0; Dumont, Sauve Homer In Win

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. In the second game of the Owls' doubleheader on Thursday of The Spring Games, Southern defeated Indiana University (Pa.), 4-0, to improve to 4-2 on the season while IUP dropped to 5-8 on the year.

Jazmyn Martinez spun a three-hit gem, holding IUP scoreless in a complete-game shutout. Martinez didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning. After giving up a two-out walk in the first, Martinez retired the next 10 batters until a lead-off single in the top of the fifth. She gave up back-to-back singles in the inning before pitching out of the jam.

Martinez picks up her first win of the season after holding IUP scoreless while scattering three hits and striking out eight in the win. 

Meanwhile, the Owls were hitless until Jacqueline Dumont poked a single in the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth, Dumont delivered the Owls' second hit of the day when she blasted a no-doubter over the left field wall with two runners on to give Southern a 3-0 lead.

In the sixth, Madelyn Sauve led off the inning with her first career home run on the second pitch of her at-bat. In three career at-bats, Sauve now has a triple and home run to her credit to start her collegiate career.

Southern will close out its week at The Spring Games against Caldwell and Purdue-Northwest on Friday, Mar. 18.
