SCSU Baseball Sweeps Saint Rose, 10-4 and 17-4

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball swept a Northeast 10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader against College of Saint Rose, 10-4 and 17-4, at The Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven, Conn. With the two wins, Southern improves to 15-4 overall and 2-1 in the NE10 while Saint Rose drops to 8-13 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

Mike Ferrett and Jack Drewry both collected four this on the day with Ferrett driving in four runs and Drewry driving in three. In the first game of the day, Ferrett was 2-for-4 with a run scored while Drewry was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Chad Fedeli also collected two hits and scored twice while Tony Zambito drove in two runs, scored twice and also had two stolen bases. Connor Goggin also drove in two runs in the Game 1 win. In the second game, Drewry was 3-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored while Ferrett was 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. Andrew Eng was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBI with three runs scored. Mike DeMartino and Dave Christoforo also hit two run homers in the Owls win, while Zambito stole two more bases.

On the mound, Nick Guarino improved to 6-0 through his first six career starts as an Owl after giving up four runs, only one of which was earned, on nine hits over seven innings for the complete game. In the second game, Steve Phillips held Saint Rose to four runs, only two earned, on five hits over fiving innings.

In the first game, Southern got on the board when Eng drove in Zambito with a single down the left field line before scoring three batters later on a ground-out by Drewry to give the Owls a 2-0 lead. In the fourth, Zambito drove in two more runs with a single through the right side of the infield, scoring Ferrett and Fedeli. After St. Rose cut Southern's lead in half, 4-2, DeMartino blasted a triple to score Goggin before Drewry drove in DeMartino to give the Owls a 6-2 lead in their next at-bat.

The Owls pushed their lead to 10-2 before Saint Rose's Jack McDonald hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the second game, Southern used a four-run first inning to take control of the game, early. Eng drove in Zambito before scoring on a Drewry single and then Ferrett doubled to plate Drewry and Goggin. Sullivan and Zambito both scored in the second to give the Owls a 6-0 lead, with St. Rose getting a run back in the bottom of the inning.

In the fourth, the Owls scored six runs on a three, two-run homers by Eng, DeMartino and Christoforo to take a 12-1 lead. St. Rose chipped away at the lead, but the Owls answered with three runs in the fifth on a two-run single by Ferrett and Christoforo driving in Drewry. In the seventh, Owls freshman Jake Gruttadauria shot a two-run double over the head of the right fielder to push across Izaiah Walker and Zach Healey and give Southern the 17-4 decision.

NOTES
  • With four stolen bases in the doubleheader, Zambito now has 17 for the season and 75 for his career, moving him past Mike Diaz's (2008) 73 career stolen bases and leaving him one short of Marc Potocsky's 76 for his career.
  • With his triple in the second game, DeMartino became the fifth player in program history to reach 10 career triples. DeMartino, with 51 doubles, is also the fourth player in program history to reach 50 career doubles.
  • DeMartino currently leads the Owls with 22 RBI as well as three home runs, four triples and seven doubles for the season.
  • Sullivan's three runs in the doubleheader give him a team-high 28 in 19 games while Eng is close behind at 26.
  • Eng also has 20 RBI while Connor Goggin has accumulated 21 RBI and 20 runs scored.
  • Goggin's six-game hitting streak is the Owls' longest active run while Eng has hit safely in five-straight games.
  • Goggin and Drewry are tied for the team-lead with six multiple-RBI games.
  • Pete Phillips pitched the final inning in relief for the Owls and extends his run to 12 innings pitched without giving up an earned run while posting 14 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched.
  • Pat Webler also pitched a perfect inning for the Owls.
