NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Jayden Delaporta (Mystic, Conn.) led the way on offense as the Southern Connecticut softball team swept The College of Saint Rose, 3-1 and 6-5, at Pelz Field. With the wins, the Owls improved to 10-12 overall and 5-5 in the Northeast 10, while the Golden Knights fell to 7-22 overall and 3-9 in the NE10.
Delaporta had a massive career day that included going 5-for-7 at the plate including a home run, a triple, and a double with four RBI and four runs scored. Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) went 2-for-4 including a home run and a double with three RBI and two runs scored. Madelyn Sauve (Mansfield, Conn.) went 2-for-3 in game two, both of which were doubles.
Game 1: Southern Connecticut 3, Saint Rose 1
Jayden Delaporta got the Owls their first baserunner of the game after blasting a stand-up double to left center field. In the next at bat, Jacqueline Dumont worked the count for a walk that gave Southern runners on first and second. Jessica Perucki (West Milford, N.J.) knocked a RBI double to right center field with two outs that scored Delaporta and put Dumont on third. Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.) took her shot at the plate with a single to left field to score Dumont and put the Owls up two runs early.
After a scoreless second inning, Saint Rose struck on offense. The Golden Knights grabbed three-straight singles to start the inning and cut the Owls lead to one.
Perucki gave up a lead-off walk to Alysa Hought to give the Golden Knights their first baserunner of fourth inning. With Saint Rose's Ellen Fuda reaching on an error with one out, Hought moved over to third into scoring position. Perucki worked herself out of the jam forcing a shallow pop up to Angela Barresi at shortstop before retiring the side with a strikeout.
Southern added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning as Dumont blasted a lead-off solo home run to left center field that put the Owls back up by two.
The Owls secured their two-run victory after a one-two-three inning in the bottom of the seventh to snap a four-game losing streak.
Game 2: Southern Connecticut 6, Saint Rose 5
Jayden Delaporta kept her hot streak alive in game two with a triple in her first at bat. After Jacqueline Dumont flew out to left field, Delaporta was able to score on the tag for the first run.
It was Southern Connecticut who struck again in the third inning. Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) picked up a single to right center for the Owls' first baserunner of the inning. Ally Petrella (Willington, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second. With two outs, it was Delaporta who got the Owls rolling once again. She knocked a RBI single to left field that scored Petrella from second and put Southern up by two. Dumont capped off the scoring in the inning with a double to right center to bring Delaporta around, 3-1 Owls.
In the top of the fifth inning, Saint Rose looked to narrow the scoring gap with a lead-off single from Julia Ripins. In the next at bat, Ciana Phillips reached on a fielder's choice, while Rupins got thrown out at second. Morgan Tyrrell singled to left field, advancing to second on an error that brought Phillips home, 3-2 Owls.
Petrella hit a lead-off single down the left field line to kick off the bottom of the fifth. Delaporta stepped to the plate and blasted a two-run home run to left center field to put the Owls expand the Owls lead to 5-2.
Saint Rose kept clawing their way back into the picture. In the top of the sixth, Savannah Liverio hot a solo home run to left center that put them back within two.
The Golden Knights struck again in the top of the seventh. They snagged back-to-back singles to lead off the inning before loading the bases with a walk. Savannah Liverio worked the count for a one-out walk that scored a run and put Saint Rose within one. Ellen Fuda flew out to center field, but scored Cianna Phillips in the process for the late-game equalizer, 5-5.
Southern took their opportunity to strike in the bottom of the inning. Emily Lange (Monroe, Conn.) hit a one-out double to left field that put a runner in scoring position and advanced to third on a wild pitch in the next at bat. Delaporta was at the plate with the golden bat and smacked a RBI single through the left side to lead the Owls to the walk-off win over Saint Rose.
