Tony Zambito Breaks SCSU Baseball Stolen Base Record, Owls Split With Stonehill

EASTON, Mass. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball split a non-conference doubleheader at Stonehill, dropping the first game, 14-11, and bouncing back for a 9-6 win in the second game. With the split, Southern goes to 22-7 overall while Stonehill moves to 14-21 on the year.

Senior Tony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) had a historic first game as he stole three bases, with the third of the day for the 81st of his career, breaking Nick Lamberti's three-year old record of 80 set during the 2019 season. Zambito is now 23-for-29 for the season, which leads the Northeast 10 Conference and ranks 17th nationally. Zambito's 1.00 steals per game also ranks third in the country.

Chad Fedeli (Monroe, Conn.) had arguable the best game of the season in the second half of the twin bill as he was 3-for-4 with a double and home run and three RBI, as well as two runs scored. Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) was 4-for-7 for the doubleheader with three RBI, including a 3-for-3 showing in the second game with a RBI double. On the mound, Nick Guarino (East Haven, Conn.) improved to 7-0 on the season after logging six solid innings in the second game, while striking out six. Tommy Hughes (Newington, Conn.) picked up his NE10-leading seventh save of the season with a perfect seventh.

In the first game, the Owls put up six runs in their first at-bat and led 11-1 through the third inning. The first eight batters in the SCSU lineup reached base, with Andrew Eng driving in Zambito with a single, before the next three batters walked to force in two more runs. Mike Ferrett then reached on an error to score another run before Zach Bedryczuk worked the Owls' fifth walk of the inning to force in the fifth run. Fedeli hit into a double play, but forced Jack Drewry home for a RBI.

Drewry added a RBI on a sacrifice fly that scored another Owls' run in the second inning. In the third, Zambito ripped a one-out single to right field and then stole his third bag of the afternoon, which stood as the record-breaking stolen base. After Billy Sullivan singled, Connor Goggin followed with a single up the middle to score Zambito and Sullivan. Mike DeMartino reached on a fielder's choice that score Eng, before Drewry singled, and Ferrett followed with a base hit to plate Eng.

From there it was all Stonehill as the Skyhawks pushed across 13 runs over their final five at-bats.

In the second game, the Owls were chasing a run before Fedeli led off the third inning with his first home run of the season, and second of his career. Zambito them walked and moved to third on a failed pick-off attempt before Sullivan hit a sacrifice fly to give the Owls a 2-1 lead. Eng then drilled a triple to the right-center field gap that scored Sullivan and gave the Owls a 3-1 lead.

Stonehill regained the lead in a five-run fifth inning, keyed by Jack Marshall's grand slam to give the Skyhawks a 6-3 lead. In the sixth, Goggin and DeMartino flew out to start the inning before Drewry ripped a two-out triple before scoring on a single by Ferrett. With Bedryczuk running for Ferrett, Izaiah Walker walked before Fedeli singled to score Bedryczuk. Zambito was hit by a pitch and then Sullivan singled to score Walker. After Fedeli scored when Sullivan was hit by a pitch, Eng was intentionally walked before Goggin was hit by a pitch to force in the Owls' fifth run of the inning to give Southern a 8-6 lead. Fedeli added a RBI double in the seventh inning to push the Owls lead to three runs, 9-6. Hughes pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning for the save.
