Softball Falls to Saint Michael's in Doubleheader Action

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Southern Connecticut softball team dropped two games of a doubleheader to Saint Michael's College, 2-1 and 7-6, at Doc Jacobs Field. The Owls fell to 8-10 overall and 3-3 in the Northeast 10 with the losses, while the Purple Knights improved to 5-10 overall and 2-2 in the NE10.

Game 1: Saint Michael's 2, Southern Connecticut 1

Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.) went 2-for-3, while Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

The beginning half of action was scoreless as both sides could not find a spark in their offense. The Owls grabbed just four hits through four innings of play, while the Purple Knights could not connect on their chances at the plate resulting in no hits and just one baserunner on a walk.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Saint Michael's had their most dangerous opportunity of the game to that point. They grabbed their first hit of the game with a single to right field. The Purple Knight's second hit of the game was a two-out clutch shot with the batter grabbing a standup double that put baserunners in scoring position. Perucki pitched herself out of the jam with her eighth strikeout of the game to end the inning.

Ally Petrella (Willington, Conn.) hit a lead-off single to the infield that started the Owls off in the top of the seventh inning. In the next at bat, Emily Lange (Monroe, Conn.) laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Petrella over to second. Jayden Delaporta (Mystic, Conn.) grounded out to the infield, but Petrella managed to squeak past the tag to get to third. With two outs, Dumont lined a RBI single down the right field line to score Petrella for the first run on either side.

The Purple Knights scored the equalizer in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-out RBI double to the gap in right center. In the next at bat, the batter laid a hit down in the infield with the runner scoring from second for the walk-off.

Game 2: Saint Michael's 7, Southern Connecticut 6

The Owls struck first in game two of the day. Jayden Delaporta got Southern its first baserunner of the inning with a single into left field and advanced to second on an error. Morgan Tuscano (Wallingford, Conn.) connected on a pitch that sent a ball sailing over the head of the center fielder to score Delaporta and record a RBI double in her first at bat.

A double in the bottom half of the first inning scored the Purple Knights two runs to give them the lead, 2-1. Martinez then retired back-to-back batters before Lange made the fly out catch in center field to end the inning.

In the top of the third inning, Delaporta blasted a lead-off solo home run to left center field that tied the game at two apiece. Dumont then earned first base after being hit by a pitch in her time at the plate. In the following at bat, Tuscano knocked a single to left field to put runners on first and second for the Owls. Katrina Roy's (Bristol, Conn.) single up the middle in the next at bat loaded the bases. Gabriella Festa (Patchogue, N.Y.) stepped to the play and with a 2-2 count, the first year player blasted a grand slam to deep left center field to put the Owls up 6-2.

Play was scoreless on both ends for the next three innings.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Purple Knights loaded the bases on three-straight hits to start the inning. A fourth-straight hit scored Saint Michael's a run to put them within three of Southern's lead. A shot to left center then scored two runs that put them within one with no outs. With one out, Saint Michael's knocked a walk-off single to the fence in left center to score two and capture a 7-6 victory in game two.
