RINDGE, N.H. - The Southern Connecticut softball team fell to Franklin Pierce in a Northeast 10 doubleheader, 9-5 and 4-3, at Bisaccia Field. With the losses, the Owls fell to 8-12 overall and 3-5 in the NE10, while the Ravens improved to 16-0 and 4-0 in the conference.
Jayden Delaporta went 4-for-7 with three runs and one RBI. Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) went 5-for-8 with three RBI and one run scored. Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.) went 4-for-8 at the plate.
Game 1: Franklin Pierce 9, Southern Connecticut 5
Emily Lange (Monroe, Conn.) kicked off the game for the Owls with a triple down the right field line. In the next at bat, Jayden Delaporta (Mystic, Conn.) ripped a standup RBI double to left field that scored Lange for Southern's first run of the game. Jacqueline Dumont's (Nashua, N.H.) infield single to the shortstop gave Southern two baserunners with no outs. After working the count, Morgan Tuscano (Wallingford, Conn.) loaded the bases with Delaporta eventually scoring the second run of the inning on a passed ball that squeaked by the catcher.
Franklin Pierce responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, the Ravens picked up a double and a walk to put runners on the bags. Then, they added a RBI double two tie the game at two.
Southern was not satisfied with the Ravens equalizer in the first inning. After Gabriella Festa (Patchogue, N.Y.) earned a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball, Lange stepped to the plate and grabbed her second hit of the game with a RBI single to right center, 3-2.
The bottom half of the second inning was quiet for the Ravens, who collected just one hit and stranded one runner.
In similar fashion, the Owls only connected on one pitch for a hit in the top of the third inning and held onto the one-run lead. Franklin Pierce took their chances at the plate in the bottom half of the inning with a lead-off double to left field. A walk put runners on the corners with one out. A RBI single to center field scored a run and kept runners on first and third. In the next at bat, a sacrifice fly to left field scored the go-ahead run on the tag, 4-3.
Ally Petrella (Willington, Conn.) earned a walk to get the Owls a baserunner in the fourth inning. After Petrella stole second, Delaporta's single to the shortstop advanced her to third and put runners on the corners. Petrella scored on a wild pitch for the equalizer, 4-4.
A lead-off double for the Ravens gave them a baserunner in the bottom of the fourth. After a pitching change for the Owls, Franklin Pierce hit a two-run home run that broke the deadlock, 6-4.
Southern grabbed two hits in the fifth inning, but could not get enough traction, which stranded the two potential tying runs on the bags at the end of the inning. The bottom of the fifth saw the Ravens grab a two-out solo home run to increase their lead to three.
The Owls found a little offense in the top of the sixth as Delaporta knocked a massive double to left field. Dumont followed that up with a RBI single to center field with Delaporta putting the wheels on from second to score, but the Ravens still led, 7-5.
Franklin Pierce kicked off the bottom of the sixth in strong fashion. The first batter grabbed a single to left field and subsequently stole second base. A double to left field in the next at bat got the Ravens the run they gave up in the top of the inning, 8-5. A sacrifice fly to right field saw the Ravens score their second run of the inning and increased their lead to four.
Tight defense saw the Ravens hold the Owls off as they went on to win it 9-5.
Game 2: Franklin Pierce 4, Southern Connecticut 3 (9 innings)
The Owls struck first for the second-straight game in the second inning with Morgan Tuscano rocketing a solo home run down the left field line.
After a quiet third inning, Jayden Delaporta earned a lead-off walk for the Owls first baserunner in the fourth. Jacqueline Dumont hit a first-pitch double to left center field that scored a wheeling Delaporta from second, 2-0.
Franklin Pierce found a groove in the fourth inning. They nabbed their first baserunner of the inning with a standup double down the left field line. A hard hit to Angela Barresi (Windsor, Conn.) at shortstop gave the Ravens an infield single and put runners on first and second. A strikeout from Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) and then a snag from Festa outside the third baseline retired the side and got the Owls out of a potentially dangerous jam.
After a quiet top half for the Owls, the Ravens bats started moving in the bottom of the fifth inning. A single to right center got them their first baserunner of the inning with that runner swiping second. In the next at bat, the Ravens grabbed a single to right field that cut the deficit to one. A double to left field scored the equalizing run, 2-2.
In the sixth inning, the Owls captured the first two outs of the inning in the first two batters. The Ravens responded with a two-out single to left field that put the potential go-ahead runner on first. Southern was able to snag the last out of the inning and keep the score deadlocked at two apiece.
After a scoreless sixth and seven innings, the game went into extra innings. In the top of the ninth, Jacqueline Dumont blasted a first-pitch lead-of solo home run to center field to give the Owls the lead. The Ravens countered in their chances at the plate with a single up the middle with the runner then stealing second in the next at bat. Franklin Pierce was able to snag another base hit up the middle that brought the runner home and tied the game at three. The Ravens' runner at first stole second to put the potential game-winning run on second. A third single up the middle in the inning scored the runner from second as Franklin Pierce remained undefeated with the 4-3 walk-off win.
Notes
- Jacqueline Dumont recorded her fourth home run of the season with one in game two against Franklin Pierce. It was also the 14th home run of her career.
- Dumont notched her ninth and 10th multi-hit games this season with three hits in game one and two hits, including a home run and a double against Franklin Pierce.
- Jayden Delaporta is riding a three-game hitting streak. Two of those games are her first and second three-hit games of the season. Her longest hitting streak this season is four games.
- Delaporta accounted for three of Southern's eight runs against Franklin Pierce over two games.
