GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The Southern Connecticut softball team fell to Adelphi University, 2-0 and 6-1, at Janet L. Ficke Field. With the losses, the Owls dropped to 13-17 overall and 8-10 in the Northeast 10, while the NE10-leading Panthers improved to 30-10 and 17-3.
Game 1: Adelphi 2, Southern Connecticut 0
- After four scoreless innings, Adelphi found its footing in the fifth. Lauren O'Neill hit a lead-off single for the Panthers' first baserunner. Lauren O'Neill moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt in the next play. With two outs, Courtney Wengryn singled to second base, advancing on the throw as O'Neill squeaked by to score the first run of the game. Another two out single from Ziara Shreter scored Wengryn from second to cap the scoring.
- The Owls' bats were not able to come alive and Adelphi went on to capture the shutout victory.
Game 2: Adelphi 6, Southern Connecticut 1
- It was Southern who struck first at the midway point of game two. After Madelyn Sauve (Mansfield, Conn.) worked the count to earn a walk, Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.) bombed a shot off the walk for a stand-up double that scored Sauve. This proved to be the Owls only run of the day.
- The Owls had the Panthers on the ropes until the bottom of the fifth inning when they scored the equalizer on a single up the middle.
- Adelphi opened the floodgates in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring the go-ahead run on an error. The Panthers would score five more runs in the inning and went on to win, 6-1.
