SCSU Baseball Tops Le Moyne On Tony Zambito's Walk-Off Home Run In 12th Inning

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball senior Tony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) hit a home run in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Owls a 2-1 win against Northeast 10 Conference Southwest Division first-place Le Moyne at The Ballpark at SCSU. With the win, the Owls improve to 23-8 overall and 7-4 in the NE10 while Le Moyne drops to 8-3 in conference play and 19-14 overall.

Zambito was 3-for-5 and scored both of the Owls' runs in the 12-inning marathon. Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) was 2-for-4 with a RBI while Connor Goggin (Prospect, Conn.) drove in Zambito with a sacrifice fly.

A pitcher's duel for most of the game, Owls starter Nick Guarino and Le Moyne's Jacob Maser traded goose eggs for the first seven innings of play. Cruising along, Le Moyne got on the board first when Drew Carroll singled home Derrick Miller with the game's first run in the top of the 8th, before Goggin's sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning tied the game.

Guarino took the no-decision despite a masterful performance on the mound. The graduate transfer from Clark University held Le Moyne to a single run on five hits while striking out five. Steve Phillips (Simbsury, Conn.) picked up the win after spinning three scoreless, hitless innings whiles striking out four of the 11 batters he faced.

Le Moyne's Maser held the Owls scoreless through seven innings while surrendering just three hits. Jed Boyle gave up the Owls' run in the eighth before Matt Tarby took the loss after the 12th inning home run. Tarby had gone 2 1/3 hitless innings while striking out four before Zambito connected for his first career home run.

The Owls' walk-off win was their second against Le Moyne this season after Andrew Eng hit a ninth inning grand slam in a walk-off win, 7-3, on Apr. 2. It was also the Owls' fourth win in their final at-bat after topping Felician on Feb. 26 and Post on Mar. 18.
