Dumont, Delaporta Help Power Owls to Sweep Over Stonehill

EASTON, Mass. - The Southern Connecticut softball team swept Stonehill College in two crucial conference battles, 7-0 and 1-0, at Father Gartland Softball Field. With the wins, the Owls improved to 15-19 overall and 10-12 in the Northeast 10, while the Skyhawks fell to 13-21 overall and 9-13 in the NE10.

The Owls were powered behind home runs from Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) and Jayden Delaporta (Mystic, Conn.) in game one and game two, respectively. Dumont went 4-for-7 on the day including a home run and a double with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Emily Lange (Monroe, Conn.) went 3-for-6 with a walk and a run scored. In game one, Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.), Madelyn Sauve (Mansfield, Mass.), and Ally Petrella (Willington, Conn.) also all notched a hit in game one.

Jessica Perucki (West Milford, N.J.) recorded a seven strikeout victory in game one, while Emma Gorham (Ellington, Conn.) picked up the save with two strikeouts. In game two, Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) recorded a five strikeout victory.

Game 1: Southern Connecticut 7, Stonehill 0

  • The first half of game one was a quiet one as both teams strung together just three hits collectively over the first three innings of play.
  • Southern struck first in the fourth as Jacqueline Dumont blasted a lead-off solo home run to get the Owls on the board.
  • Sixth inning action was when the Owls began to pile it on. Dumont, once again, notched a hit, a single through the right side, to get a runner on. Madelyn Sauve moved Dumont over with a single through the left side. With runners on first and second, Emma Gorham laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over and in scoring position. A sacrifice fly from Liz DeRosa scored the runner from third, while Sauve squeaked by to score on an error, 3-0.
  • Another big inning came in the seventh as the Owls continued to blow the score wide open. Gabriella Festa hit a single to left field in the one-spot to kick off the inning. Ally Petrella got two runners on with a single to right center in the next at bat. Emily Lange singled in the Owls' third at bat of the inning to load the bases. A sacrifice fly from Delaporta, scored Festa on the tag for Southern's fourth run. Dumont stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and ripped a double down the left field line to score both Petrella and Lange, 7-0.
  • The Owls held Stonehill hitless from the second inning on.

Game 2: Southern Connecticut 1, Stonehill 0

  • Game two began quiet, much like game one. Southern scattered four hits through the first five innings, while Stonehill connected on the ball three times.
  • Jayden Delaporta played hero in the sixth inning with a one out solo home run to left center field that was the deciding factor as the Owls went on to capture the victory, 1-0.

Notes

  • Jessica Perucki picked up her seventh win of the season. This was Perucki's second shutout of the season.
  • Emma Gorham recorded her first save of the season and the second save of her career.
  • Jazmyn Martinez earned her eighth win of the season in game two. Eight wins is a single-season career-high for the graduate student, whose prior season-high was seven wins.
  • Jayden Delaporta's home run in game two was the fourth of the season and ninth of her career.
  • Jacqueline Dumont's home run in game one was her sixth of the season and the 16th of her career.
  • The Owls have now swept Stonehill in back-to-back series'. Southern took both games of the doubleheader the last time these two teams met in 2018.
