Softball Walks It Off in Game One Win Over SNHU; Ties in Game Two Due to Darkness

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut softball program defeated Southern New Hampshire in walk-off fashion in game one, 6-5 (nine innings), and drew a tie in game two, 10-10, at Pelz Field. With the decisions, the Owls moved to 16-19-1 overall and 11-12-1 in the Northeast 10, while the Penmen moved to 20-19-1 overall and 14-9-1 in the NE10.

Jacqueline Dumont (Nashua, N.H.) was solid at the plate today for Southern Connecticut. Dumont went 6-for-9 with four runs batted in and three runs scored. Madelyn Sauve (Mansfield, Conn.) went 6-for-10 with three runs batted in and three runs scored. Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.) 4-for-10 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Emily Lange (Monroe, Conn.) went 5-for-9 with three runs scored.

Both starting pitchers contributed on offense. Jessica Perucki (West Milford, N.J.), who pitched all nine innings in the game one victory went 1-for-3 including a walk with two runs batted in. Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.), who pitched 4.2 innings with two strikeouts, went 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. Jayden Delaporta had two walks on the day with five runs scored. Morgan Tuscano (Wallingford, Conn.) went 3-for-4 in game two with two runs batted in.
 
Game 1: Southern Connecticut 6, Southern New Hampshire 5 (nine innings)
  • Emily Lange got things started in game one for the Owls with a lead-off single through the right side. Jacqueline Dumont stepped to the plate and knocked a one-out single down the left field line that scored the first run.
  • Southern New Hampshire responded in the third inning. Brittany Mota laid down a bunt to get the Penmen a baserunner. Bryn Garcynski would then hit an infield single to put two runners on. Shannon Gifford knocked a double to left center that scored Mota and tied the game. Aly Dimauro added to the Penmen lead with a two RBI single up the middle that scored Garczynski and Gifford, 3-1.
  • In the bottom of the third, Jayden Delaporta singled through the left side to get the Owls first baserunner. Jacqueline Dumont moved Delaporta to third with a shot to right center that put runners on the corners. Madelyn Sauve's at bat saw her out at first, but scored Delaporta in the process to cut the Penmen's lead to one, 3-2.
  • It was the Penmen again in the fourth inning adding to their lead. After Jordyn Resetar singled, Jill Johnson came in to pinch run for her, eventually scoring on a Garcynski groundout, 4-2.
  • SNHU extended their lead again in the fifth inning with a Chloe Griffin solo home run to left field.
  • After a quiet sixth inning, the Owls looked to equalize the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lange, hitting in the lead-off spot, a double to right center field. Dumont followed that up with a single through the left side with Lange putting the wheels on from second to score. Madison Shura (Wallingford, Conn.) came in to pinch run for Dumont and advanced to second on a Sauve single to left field. DeRosa reached on a fielder's choice as the Owls kept runners on first and second for Jessica Perucki. Percuki blasted a double to right field that scored Sauve and DeRosa to tie the game and send the game into extra innings.
  • The ninth inning saw the game's final breakthrough. Dumont knocked a single up the middle to get a runner on. After a fly-out in the next at bat, DeRosa singled to center field. Both Dumont and DeRosa advanced on a passed ball. Perucki's one-out walk loaded the bases for Southern Connecticut. Katrina Roy (Bristol, Conn.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field as Dumont scampered home on the tag to end it in walk-off fashion for the Owls, 6-5.
     
 

Game 2: Southern Connecticut 10, Southern New Hampshire 10 (nine innings)
*The game ended due to darkness. Per the Northeast 10 policy manual, the game goes into the record as a tie.
  • Southern Connecticut struck first again in game two. Emily Lange and Jayden Delaporta picked up singles in back-to-back at bats for the Owls, both advancing to the next base on the throw from Delaporta's hit into play. Dumont's sacrifice fly scored Lange from third to record the first run of the game. Madelyn Sauve singled to put runners on the corners for Liz DeRosa. DeRosa ripped a single down the left field line that scored Delaporta. Morgan Tuscano's at bat saw her add to the Owls runs with a double down the left field line to score Sauve. SCSU capped their first inning scoring with a single through the left side from Jazmyn Martinez, who scored DeRosa on the play, 4-0 Owls.
  • The Owls added to their lead in the second inning. After Delaporta walked to get on, Sauve knocked a single down the right field line as Delaporta put the wheels on to score, 5-0.
  • Southern New Hampshire had answers in the top of the third inning. The Penmen's Shannon Gifford singled in the lead-off spot to start things off. Another single from Aly Dimauro gave SNHU two baserunners with a chance to score their first runs of the game. Emily Carbonneau made it happen with a single up the middle to score Gifford from second. Bella Dickinson was able to solve Martinez with a one-out, three-run home run to put the Penmen within one of the Owls, 5-4.
  • SNHU scored the equalizer in the fourth inning as Shannon Gifford led off with a double to left center. Dimauro's sacrifice bunt moved Gifford to third. Carbonneau picked up a single as the Owls looked to hold Gifford at third. Gifford eventually scored on the next play to tie the game at five apiece.
  • The Owls regained the lead in the fourth inning. Delaporta worked the count for a walk to lead-off sport. Madelyn Sauve singled and advanced to second on the throw in an attempt to get Delaporta, but both runners remained safe on their bags on second and third. Liz DeRosa knocked a shot into deep right center field that scored both Delaporta and Sauve, 7-5.
  • The Penmen would not go away quietly. Brittany Mota got on base with a single up the middle in the fifth. A single from pinch hitter Jill Johnson gave SNHU two baserunners with one out. Bryn Garczynski reached on a fielder's choice in the next at bat that moved Mota to third. A single from Gifford gave the Penmen their sixth run, 7-6.
  • Southern Connecticut responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. After Delaporta reached on a fielder's choice, Dumont singled for two runners on. Sauve knocked a single that scored Delaporta. DeRosa reached on an error by the shortstop to load the bases with two outs. Morgan Tuscano worked the count to earn a walk that scored a run and put the Owls up by three, 9-6.
  • Action in the sixth inning continued to be interesting. After Carbonneau reached on an error, Chloe Griffin singled. With two runners on, Jordyn Resetar hit a double that scored both runs and put the Penmen back within striking distance of the Owls.
  • After a quiet bottom half of the inning for the Owls, SNHU took a chance in the top of the seventh. A single from Garczynski to lead off and advanced in the next play on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, it was Carbonneau again for the Penmen, who doubled to tie the game at nine. A double from Griffin gave SNHU the go-ahead run with one opportunity left for the Owls.
  • Dumont said no problem and hit a first-pitch, lead-off home run to left field that tied the game.
  • Both sides took their chances in the eighth, but ultimately the game was called due to darkness and ruled a tie in the high-scoring affair.

The Owls will close out the regular season and honor their seniors on Saturday, April 30 against Saint Anselm. The pregame ceremony is slated for 11:30 a.m., while first pitch is set for noontime.
