SCSU Baseball Sweeps AIC, 13-8 & 11-2

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball swept a Northeast 10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader at American International, winning 13-8 and 11-2. With the sweep, the Owls improve to 28-10 overall and 12-6 in the NE10 while AIC drops to 11-29 overall and 5-17 in conference play.

Chad Fedeli led the Owls at the plate with two hits in the first game and three in the second game to wrap a 5-for-8 day with five RBI and three runs scored. Tony Zambito was 4-for-6 with three RBI and five runs scored. Zambito's three stolen bases in the doubleheader give him 31 for the year, which is the third most in a single-season while he also becomes the fifth player in program history to steal 30 bases in a single year, and the first since Mike Diaz in 2008 to do it.

On the mound, Joe Nemchek picked up the win in the first game after giving up three hits and striking out 10 while Steve Phillips improved to 8-1 on the season after a striking out nine in six innings in which AIC managed two runs. Pete Phillips finished both games for the Owls, holding AIC scoreless on one hit while striking out four in two innings, including three in the second game.

With a single in the 5th inning of the first game, Mike DeMartino became the first player since since Nick Lamberti in 2019, to reach the 200-hit mark. The single made DeMartino just the third player in program history, joining Ryan Geffert and Henry Lee, with 200 hits, 150 RBI, 100 runs scored and 50 doubles while also playing in his 193rd career game. DeMartino sits six games short of breaking the record of 198 held by Geffert.

In the first game, Nemchek gave up a run in the 1st and 2nd innings, on two hits, before settling in. Following a solo home run by AIC's Kevin Caffrey, Nemchek retired the next 12 batters he faced including eight strikeouts through the fifth inning. In the seventh, he was hit for three runs before being lifted in favor of Pat Webler. Nemchek improved to 2-1 on the year while also striking out a season-best 10 batters. Nemchek got Caffrey to ground into a double play and Dalton Quinn to ground out to end the inning.

After scoring a pair of runs in their first at-bat, the Owls blew the game open with a five-run fourth inning. After Southern strung together four-straight singles, a pair of errors aided the Owls in taking a 7-2 lead. In the 5th inning, Andrew Eng singled to get on base and then scored on a throwing error on a ball hit by Fedeli before Izaiah Walker doubled to score Fedeli.

In the sixth, DeMartino drove in Zambito, who walked to start the inning, before Fedeli drove home Goggin and Drewry singled to score DeMartino and give the Owls a 12-2 lead. AIC threatened late, scoring three runs off of Nemchek in the sixth, and also pushing across three more in the bottom of the seventh. In the Yellow Jackets' final at-bat, Webler walked the bases loaded before Pete Phillips entered the game and ended the threat.

In the second game, the Owls scored the game's first run when Zambito singled, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by AIC's catcher. He came in with the game's first run on a ground ball by Sullivan.

In the fourth, Southern loaded the bases when Fedeli doubled and Drewry and Bedryczuk walked. Zambito was then hit by a pitch to force Fedeli home and give the Owls a 2-1 lead. The Owls manufactured two more runs in the fifth inning, keyed by an Andrew Eng double, and then took a 6-2 lead on a two-run double by Sullivan in the sixth. Sullivan then scored on a sacrifice fly by Fedeli to make it 7-2.

In the seventh, Bedryczuk stroked a lead-off double and was bunted over by Zambito. After Sullivan walked, Bedryczuk scored on a sacrifice fly by Eng. Southern loaded the bases again with Goggin getting hit by a pitch and DeMartino walking before Fedeli singled to left to score Sullivan and Goggin and give the Owls a 10-2 lead.

Southern and AIC meet against on Sunday, May 1 with a doubleheader set for a 1 p.m. start. The first game of the twin bill be the fourth game of the Owls' NE10 series against the Yellow Jackets, while the second game will be a non-conference game.
