WORCESTER, Mass. - The Southern Connecticut State University lacrosse team lost to No. 18 Assumption, 14-11, in the regular season finale at Brian Kelly '83 Stadium on Saturday, April 30, 2022. The Owls end the season at 4-12 overall and 3-10 in the Northeast 10, while the Greyhounds are now 10-7 overall and 8-5 in the NE10.
Brianna Shaw (Branford, Conn.) had three goals to lead the Owls' offense, while
Morgan Reilly (Stratford, Conn.), Bayleigh Takacs (Sparta, N.J.), and
Savannah Feinberg (Sound Beach, N.Y.) had two each.
Mia Pulisciano (Cheshire, Conn.) and
Alexa Alchimio (Wallingford, Conn.) all scored one goal each, and
Karlie Rowe (Niantic, Conn.) had two assists.
How It Happened
First Quarter
- The Owls jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead out of the gates. Pulisciano scored the first goal of the game on an assist by Rowe just over a minute in, but Assumption was able to tie the game.
- Takacs and Shaw scored back-to-back goals to give Southern the lead back. Both goals came on free-position shots.
- The Greyhounds scored four consecutive goals to end the period and take a 5-3 lead.
Second Quarter
- Assumption opened the quarter with two more goals, and outscored Southern 5-1 in the quarter, to take a 10-4 halftime lead.
- Feinberg scored on a free-position goal at the 4:49 mark to break up Assumption's run.
Third Quarter
- Southern exploded late in the third quarter to get right back into the game.
- Reilly found the back of the net on a free-position shot in the opening minutes, but Assumption scored the next two goals of the third to take their largest lead of the game at 12-5 with 5:12 remaining.
- However, Southern outscored Assumption 4-0 to cut the deficit to 12-9. Feinberg scored with 3:43 remaining, then Southern rattled off three goals in the final 1:04 of the quarter.
- Shaw's goal also came on a free-position shot, then Takacs scored on another assist by Rowe and Reilly scored in the final seconds.
Fourth Quarter
- Assumption scored the first goal of the final quarter with 6:08 remaining. Southern responded with a free-position goal by Alchimio at the 4:20 mark.
- Both teams exchanged goals in the final three minutes, with Shaw scoring the final goal of the game.
Notes
- Shaw tied her career-high in goals with three, also done on March 2, 2022 vs Post.
- Reilly also recorded the first multiple-goal game of her career.
- Takacs has recorded at least one point in 31 consecutive games dating back to April 13, 2019,
- Rowe has recorded at least one goal or one assist in 44 of her 47 career games.
- Rowe also set a new career-high in draw controls with four.
- Feinberg ended the season with six consecutive games with a goal scored, with multiple goals in four of six games.
- Alchimio scored the second goal of her career.
- Despite the Owls being short handed due to health and safety protocols, they were able to hang take the lead on a nationally-ranked, top-20 opponent early in the game, and battled back towards the end of the game despite the defeat.
Season Overview
- Takacs was the only Southern player to score a goal in every game this season, scored multiple goals in 12 of her 14 games played this season. Shaw joined Takacs as the only Southern player with a goal or assist in every game.
- Takacs (51) and Rowe (50) both reached the 50-point mark for the season, the second pair of Southern teammates with at least 50 points in a season. The trio of Nicole Healey (Milford, Conn.), Samantha Cozzolino (Hamden, Conn.), and Carolynn Keal (Southington, Conn.) were the first in 2018.
- Takacs' 51 points puts her in ninth place in the all-time single-season Southern point total, while Rowe is tied for 10th.
- With her two assists today, Rowe ended the season with 14 total, the sixth most by a Southern player in a season. Takacs ended the season with 13 assists, seventh most in a season for a Southern player.
- Shaw finished the season with 34 caused turnovers, the seonnd most in a single season in program history. Sarah Robbins (Farmingdale, N.Y.) finished the season with the fourth most with 27. It's the first time in SCSU history two pairs of teammates had at least 25 caused turnovers in the same season.
- Southern allowed 14.12 goals per game in 2022, their lowest in a full, non-shortened season since allowing 11.99 in 2016. Their 14.92 goals per game allowed in conference games is their lowest since allowing 14.49 in 2017.
- Southern had 200 caused turnovers, a single-season program record.
