SCSU Baseball Falls To New Haven On Senior Day

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball dropped the final two games of the regular season against New Haven, 13-4 and 8-6, in a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader at The Ballpark at SCSU. The Owls conclude the regular season with an overall record of 30-12-1 including a 14-8-1 mark in NE10 play.

Despite the two losses, the Owls wrapped-up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Northeast 10 Conference Championship Tournament and will host Le Moyne on Tuesday, May 10 at 3:30 p.m. on their home field.

Billy Sullivan was 3-for-7 with three runs scored while Andrew Eng 3-for-6 with three RBI. Connor Goggin and Mike DeMartino drove in a run in both games while Mike Ferrett was 3-for-3 with a RBI in the second game and Izaiah Walker was 2-for-3 with a RBI.

In the first game, Southern took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st when Zambito doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning before stealing third. The stolen base was Zambito's 38th of the season, which leads the NE10 and ranks fourth nationally. He scored on Eng's ground ball to second. UNH responded in the top of the third with four runs to take a 4-1 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Sullivan laced a two-out double to left field before Eng followed with a double of his own to score Sullivan and cut the Chargers' lead to 4-2. On the mound, senior Joe Nemchek gave up two earned runs in the second, and another unearned one. Errors plagued the southpaw's start as New Haven pushed five more runs in the top of fifth inning, all unearned, to take a 9-2 lead. Tyshaun Diaz came on in relief in the fifth inning.

Southern chipped away in the bottom half of the inning as Zambito and Sullivan singled before Eng was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Goggin then hit a sacrifice fly to score Zambito and DeMartino drove in Sullivan to bring Sullivan in.

IN the sixth, Diaz walked New Haven's Tyler Wells, gave up a single to Noah Budzink and then hit Robert Taylor with a pitch before Andrew Cain drove in two runs with a single up the middle and Andrew Bianco and Kenneth Franquiz both hit sacrifice fly balls to give the Chargers a 13-4 lead. Pat Webler pitched a scoreless seventh to close the game for Southern.

In the second game, Sullivan singled in the first inning before scoring on Eng's double to give the Owls the early lead, 1-0. In the top of the second, Cain dropped down a bunt and beat the throw to first by Owls' starter Nick Guarino. Bianco then connected for a home run to left to give the Chargers a 2-1 lead.

The Owls responded in the bottom of the second. Ferrett singled on the first pitch of the inning before Drewry then hit a dribbler to no-man's land between the mound and first base. After Chad Fedeli bunted both runners over, Ferrett scored on a wild pitch with Drewry moving to third. Walker then singled through the left-side of the infield to score Drewry and give the Owls a 3-2 lead.

In the third, Ferrett drove in Goggin, who reached on a double to give the Owls a 4-2 lead. UNH's continued to hit Guarino, tagging the Owls starter for four runs on four hits to take a 6-4 lead in the fourth.

In the fifth, Guarino gave up a single to Cain and a double to Bianco to start the inning before he was replaced by Alec Erskine. Erskine gave up a single to Franquiz that resulted in two more Chargers' runs as they took an 8-4 lead.

Southern mounted a late comeback, as they scored twice in the bottom of the seventh. Zambito and Sullivan walked to start the inning before Eng popped up to center. Goggin then singled through the right side of the infield, scoring Zambito from second. DeMartino then hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Sullivan with the game's last run.
