SCSU Field Hockey Falls To Molloy, 3-2

SEAFORD, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut field hockey lost to Molloy, 3-2, in a non-conference matchup Cedar Creek Park in Seaford, N.Y. With the loss, Southern drops to 0-3 on the season while Molloy opens the year at 1-0.

The Lions, who were the preseason No. 14 team in the country, took a 2-0 lead before halftime despite Southern outshooting Molloy, 8-5, including a 5-to-3 edge on shots-on-goal. For the game, the Owls outshot Molloy, 17-11, including 11-to-7 on goal. In the second half, Southern cut Molloy's lead in half when Brianna Caffrey (Hampton, Conn.) scored the Owls' first goal of the game, and season, off of a penalty corner.

With just-under nine minutes to play in the fourth quarter, Trinidad Rodriguez Ricchiuti (Buenos Aires, Argentina) drew the goalie out of the goal and then shot the ball over her to tie the game at 2-2.

With less than three minutes to play, Molloy converted off a rebound to the lead and cap the one-goal win.

Southern is back in action when it travels to Springfield, Mass. on Tuesday, Sept. 13 to take on American International College at 7 p.m.
