WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut football's come-back bid at University of New Haven fell short as the Owls lost a non-conference matchup at their Elm City rival, 31-26. Southern drops to 0-2 on the No. 24 Chargers improve to 1-1.

Southern got on the board first, scoring just under five minutes into the game when starting quarterback Marc Reali hooked up with Papallo on a 20-yard touchdown pass. After UNH cut the Owls' lead in half on a field goal, 6-3, DiGello picked off a pass by Chargers' quarterback Connor Degenhardt at midfield and returned it for the score. Szymon Gawlick's point-after gave Southern a 13-3 lead.

New Haven responded with a Shamar Logan 22-yard touchdown run to cut the Owls' lead to 13-10. Southern was driving on its next position, highlighted by runs of 11 and 15 and a 20-yard reception by Tim O'Shea on 2nd and 16 that gave the Owls a first down on the Chargers' 20-yard line before UNH's Damon Burton picked off a pass by Reali. The Owls held the lead until just under three minutes when Degenhardt hit Chris Carlyle for a 22-yard touchdown that gave UNH a 17-13 lead at halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, UNH pushed its lead to 24-13 on a touchdown pass by Degenhardt to Kevin Foelsch. With six minutes to play, Joe Bernard drove the Owls' 89 yards on 12 plays before a 32-yard pass to Papallo gave the Owls the ball on UNH's 1-yard line before Wilson pushed it in to cut New Haven's lead to 24-19.

Bernard again moved the Owls down the field, completing a 14-yard pass to Papallo and a 26-yard pass to Jevon Jones, which he lateraled to Papallo for another nine yards to give the Owls a first down on UNH's 11-yard line. Bernard hooked up with Wilson on a 10-yard pass then gave it back to Wilson for his second one-yard touchdown run of the day.
