SCSU Women's Basketball Defeats Bentley, 63-55

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated Bentley, 63-55, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House in New Haven, Conn. With the win, Southern improved to 12-7 overall and 7-6 in the NE10 while Bentley lost its fourth-straight game to drop to 12-8 overall and 9-5 in the conference.

Southern win against Bentley ended a nine-game losing streak to the Falcons and is also the Owls' first win at home against Bentley since Jan. 10, 2015. Zoe Amalbert scored a game-high 15 points, including the 1,000th point of her career, which includes two seasons at New York Tech. Isabella Santoro (Durham, Conn.) totaled 12 points and seven rebounds while Katie Williamson (Dublin, Ireland) had nine points, seven rebounds and five assists. Delaney Connors (Portsmouth, Me.) had eight points off the bench.

Bentley took an 8-2 lead early, but a pair of three-pointers by Zoe Amalbert and Isabella Santoro helped the Owls on a 10-4 run to close the first quarter tied, 12-12. Coming out of the break Santoro scored the Owls' first four points of the second quarter to give Southern its first lead of the game, 16-14. Southern took its largest lead of the half, 19-14, on a Santoro free throw and a Delaney Connors layup.

Bentley regained the lead moments later but it was a Amalbert three-pointer with 2:28 to play that gave the Owls a 24-22 lead. After Bentley responded, Delaney Haines got in on the action and knocked down a three of her own to push Southern's lead to 27-24, but a Bentley layup with 90 seconds to go capped the first-half scoring and sent the game to the break with the Owls leading 27-26.

Coming out of the break, Southern outscored Bentley, 19-16, to take a 46-42 lead into the fourth quarter. Katie Williamson totaled seven points in the quarter that saw Southern shoot 50% (6-12) from the floor but also converted on 6-of-7 from the free throw line.

Santoro hit a layup early on the Owls' first possession in the fourth to push Southern's lead to 48-42, but it would be the final points for the Owls for the next four minutes as Bentley scored five unanswered points to cut Southern's lead to a point, 48-47. Coming out of a timeout, Santoro took a back door pass from Williamson and broke the Owls' scoreless streak with a layup to give Southern a 50-47. Amalbert then made it a two-possession game with her third three-pointer of the game as Southern took a 53-47 lead. As the game went to free throws down the stretch, Southern was able to hold its lead against the Falcons and held on for the pivotal conference win.

Southern is back in action on Monday, Jan. 30 when it hosts Saint Rose in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at 5:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
