SCSU Women's Basketball Defeats Saint Rose, 51-47

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated Saint Rose, 51-47, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the win, Southern improved to 13-7 overall and 8-6 in the NE10 while Saint Rose dropped to 9-10 overall and 6-8 in conference play.

Katie Williamson (Dublin, Ireland) scored a game-high 15 points, with five rebounds and a pair of blocks. Zoe Amalbert (Nanuet, N.Y.) tallied 11 points, five assists and four steals while Delaney Connors (West Hartford, Conn.) had 10 points, with four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Isabella Santoro (Durham, Conn.) had a team-leading nine rebounds and six points.

Amalbert and Williamson powered the Owls in the first half, with Williamson totaling 11 points to Amalbert's 10. Williamson scored six of the Owls' first nine points as the Owls jumped out to a 9-3 lead with just under four minutes to go in the first quarter. After Saint Rose tied it at 9-9, a basket by Isabella Santoro and a three-pointer by Amalbert gave the Owls a 14-9 lead through the first 10 minutes of the game.

Southern controlled play through the second quarter as well, outscoring Saint Rose, 17-9, to head into halftime with a 31-18 lead. Southern used an 8-3 run early in the quarter to take a 22-12 lead, with Amalbert dropping in four points. Leading 25-18 with 1:48 to play in the half, Southern closed the half on a 6-0 run, with Delaney Connors scoring twice.

Despite being outscored in the third quarter, the Owls held on to a nine-point lead through the third quarter, while also leading by as much as 11, and started the fourth quarter with a 40-31 lead. In the fourth, Saint Rose came within three points of the Owls, 48-45, with 31 seconds to play, but a layup by Connors with 24 ticks on the clock made it a two possession game, while a Amalbert free throw sealed it for the Owls.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 4 when it travels to Pleasantville, N.Y. for a NE10 matchup against Pace at 1:30 p.m. The Owls will then head to Saint Rose on Feb. 7 before returning to James Moore Field House for a NE10 game against Adelphi on Saturday, Feb. 11.
