PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.- Southern Connecticut women's basketball fell to Pace University, 63-53, in a Northeast 10 Conference game in Pleasantville, N.Y. The loss drops the Owls to 13-8 overall and 8-7 in the NE10 while Pace boosts to 9-14 overall and 6-10 in conference play.
Katie Williamson (Dublin, Ireland) recorded a double-double with a team-best in points (14) and rebounds (10). She notched eight of those points within the second half, while grabbing five rebounds in each half. Renza Milner (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Zoë Amalbert (Nanuet, N.Y.) each tabbed 11 points apiece with Milner attaining her season-high in points. Milner also collected eight rebounds and blocked two shots. Amalbert had five assists and collected one steal in the Owls' loss.
The Setters took the lead just one minute into the first quarter. Amalbert's efforts helped the Owls to take a slight lead three minutes into the game off a jumper and two good free throws to make the score 6-4. Pace responded by going on an eight point run to turn the tide in their favor, 12-6. With two minutes left in the quarter, Southern made a final push to narrow the score off a three-pointer by Delaney Haines and (Portland, Me.) and a layup by Renza Milner, 19-15.
Pace created an even larger gap in score by the end of the first half, but not without a fight from the Owls. Two minutes into the period, Amalbert clutched a valuable three-pointer that narrowed the score to a one point deficit, 21-20. Pace began another run of 11 unanswered points, 32-20, until four minutes remained in the half when Hope Fox (Guilford, Ind.) provided a driving layup. At the halftime buzzer, the score read 36-24.
Pace pulled away further to start the second half by converting five points in the first two minutes. The Owls responded with a jumper by Williamson and another three-pointer by Haines, 41-29. Southern slowly fell further with Pace taking a 15 point lead at the closure of the quarter, 50-35.
Southern fought back in the final quarter of the game, but it was not enough for the Owls. Renza Milner converted seven points with Delaney Connors (West Hartford, Conn.) notching five in the final ten minutes. Time ran out for the Owls and left a final score of 63-53.
The Owls are back in action when it travels to Albany, N.Y. to face Saint Rose in an NE10 Conference matchup on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 5:30 p.m.
