SCSU Men's Basketball Downs Georgian Court, 73-65

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball defeated Georgian Court, 73-65, in a non-conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improve to 14-8 on the year while GCU drops to 10-11 overall.

Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) totaled 20 points with four assists and three steals, while converting on 3-of-4 from three-point range. It was Coleman's fourth 20-point game of the season and his third game with 19 or more points in his last four outings. Additionally, Coleman continued his climb up the all-time scoring charts, this time passing Kevin Connors (1,287) for 17th in program history and currently stands at 1,298 for his career. With 178 career three-pointers, he also ranks sixth all-time.

Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) finished with a double-double with 10 rebounds and 10 assists while just missing the triple-double with seven points. Kazell Stewart (West Hartford, Conn.) tallied 14 points and three blocks while Cherif Diarra (Queens, N.Y.) had 13 rebounds and eight points, with two blocks.

Both teams played even until there was just under seven minutes remaining in the first half. Leading 26-25, the Owls used a 12-2 run to take a 38-27 lead with 3:15 to go. Georgian Court countered with a 9-0 run to pull within a basket, 38-36, before Coleman banged home a three-pointer with time expiring to give the Owls a five-point lead, 41-36, heading into the break. Coleman led the Owls with 13 points in the first frame.

With the Owls leading 47-45 early in the second half, Southern took off on a 10-2 run to take a 57-47 lead midway through the half. Southern led 60-49 before the Lions used a 9-4 edge to cut the Owls' lead to six points, 64-58, with 3:21 to go and were able to hold on down the stretch.

Southern finds itself on the road for its next two games, first traveling to Pace on Saturday, Feb. 4 for a 3:30 p.m. tip-off. The Owls will then head to Albany, N.Y. on Tuesday, Feb. 7 to take on Saint Rose at 7:30 p.m. Southern closes the year with three of their final four games at home at James Moore Field House.
