SCSU Women's Basketball Coasts To 68-41 Win At Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated Franklin Pierce, 68-41, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup in Rindge, N.H. Southern's win at Franklin Pierce was their third-straight win and fourth win in its last five games. The Owls improve to 9-3 overall and 4-2 in the NE10.

Zoe Amalbert (Nanuet, N.Y.) led the Owls with 18 points and six assists while knocking down 4-of-6 from three-point range and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Katie Williamson (Dublin, Ireland) posted her fourth double-double of the season, totaling 14 points and 10 rebounds. Isabella Santoro () had 11 points and five assists while Rheyna Steinauer (Oakville, Ontario) had seven points and six rebounds off the bench. The points were the first of Steinauer's career.

Southern led early after a dominant first quarter by Williamson. The Owls' sophomore had 10 of Southern's 15 points in the frame that saw SCSU outscore Franklin Pierce, 15-9. Williamson also controlled the glass with seven rebounds in the first quarter.

Coming out of the first break, the Owls used an 11-3 run over the first five minutes of the second quarter to take a 26-15 lead, with five points from Zoe Amalbert and a pair of layups from Renza Milner. Southern closed the half outscoring the Ravens, 10-6, keyed by back-to-back three-pointers from Amalbert and Delaney Connors, to take a 36-21 lead into the half. Halfway through, Amalbert paced Southern with 11 points, eight coming in the second quarter, while Williamson had 10. Isabella Santoro had six points and four assists midway through the game.

The third quarter saw the Owls come out firing as they used a 12-3 lead to take a 48-24 lead in the first two minutes of the quarter. Santoro and Amalbert blitzed the Ravens with back-to-back three-pointers while Milner, Alexa Kellner and Connors also contributed to the early run. In the closing minutes of the third, Southern emptied the bench as they grabbed a 37-point lead, 63-26, to head to the fourth. Southern closed the quarter outscoring the Ravens, 27-5 in the third frame.

Southern limited Franklin Pierce to just three field goals over the second and third quarters while outscoring the Ravens, 48-17, in that span. The Owls led by as many as 37 in the game, before Franklin Pierce outscored the Owls' reserves, 15-5, in the final eight minutes of play.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 7 when it travels to Worcester, Mass. to face NE10 first-place Assumption at 1:30 p.m. The Owls return home on Tuesday, Jan. 10 to host Saint Michael's in a Winter Break matinee at 1 p.m.
