SCSU Women's Basketball Dealt Setback At Assumption, Fall 62-51

WORCESTER, Mass. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball lost to Assumption, 62-51, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup in Worcester, Mass. With the loss, Southern drops to 4-3 in the NE10 and 9-4 overall while the first-place Greyhounds improve to 13-1 overall and 7-1 in conference play.

Katie Williamson (Dublin, Ireland) led the Owls with 13 points, seven of which came in the second half. Williamson hit on 6-of-11 from the floor, while also pulling in four rebounds. Zoe Amalbert (Nanuet, N.Y.) had eight points and seven rebounds, with three assists while Renza Milner (Carlsbad, Calif.) came off the bench to score all 10 of her points in the final 20 minutes of play. She also finished with six rebounds and three assists. Isabella Santoro (Durham, Conn.) finished with nine points and three rebounds for the Owls.

Assumption outscored the Owls, 19-6, in the first quarter as the Greyhounds converted on 8-of-15 from the floor and 3-of-5 from three-point range. Southern wasn't able to solve the Hounds' defense in the first quarter, hitting on just 3-of-12 in the game's first 10 minutes.

Southern came out on fire to start the second quarter, opening with a 9-2 run to cut Assumptions lead to 21-15. Amalbert scored four points in the run while Santoro also knocked down a huge three-pointer. As the quarter rolled along, the two teams traded baskets as Southern pulled with in five points, 26-21, but it was a late 10-2 run for the Greyhounds that sent the Owls into the locker room trailing, 36-23, at the half.

Assumption's first half lead would be all it needed, as the Owls outscored Assumption, 28-26, in the second half, including a 16-9 edge in the final 10 minutes of the game. In the fourth, Renza Milner and Rheyna Steinauer combined for five points each, while Williamson contributed four.

Southern Connecticut is back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 10 when it hosts Saint Michael's for a NE10 Conference matchup set for a 1 p.m. start at James Moore Field House.
