SCSU Men's Basketball Opens Season With 75-65 Win Against University of the District of Columbia

Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball opened the 2023-24 season with a 75-65 win against University of the District of Columbia at James Moore Field House in New Haven, Conn.



Marty Silvera led the Owls with a game-high 19 points while also logging a full box score with five rebounds, six assists and two steals. Silvera hit 7-of-9 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. First-year Owl Josh McGettigan, who transferred to SCSU from Saint Rose, had 18 points in his Owls' debut after knocking down four three-pointers in the game.

Sean James totaled 12 points, five rebounds and four assists while Cherif Diarra grabbed 15 rebounds and had three blocks.

The first five minutes of the game saw the Owls' kicking some of the rust off as DC jumped out to a 10-4 lead. Both teams played even over the next several minutes as the UDC took a 26-21 lead. The owls counted with a 12-1 run to take a 33-27 lead with Mason Williams converting on a pair of three-pointers to close the half.

Southern was in control of the lead for most of the second half before UDC cut Southern's lead to a basket, 55-53, with 6:14 to play. McGettigan and Silvera took over for the Owls as they scored half of their points in the final six minutes of regulation as the Owls outscored UDC, 20-13, down the stretch with the duo combining for 17 points.

Southern is back in action on Sunday, Nov. 12 when it heads down I95 to take on University of Bridgeport at 6:30 p.m. at Hubbel Gymnasium.
