SCSU Women's Basketball Beats Georgian Court, 78-54 in Season Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut women's basketball beat Georgian Court University, 78-54, in their season opening game on Saturday afternoon in the James Moore Field House. 

Southern came ready to play in the first quarter as they scored 24 points over the Lions. In the second quarter, Georgian Court almost evened things up with 11 points against the Owls' 16 points. In the third quarter, it was a back-and-forth battle but Southern scored 19 points to Georgian Court's 12 points. In the fourth quarter, the Owls pulled away with 24 points and defended well, as the Lion scored eight points. 

Both Katie Williamson and Makenzie Helms recorded their first double-doubles of the season against the Lions. Williamson had a team-best of 14 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and two steals. Helms scored 11 points, had 10 assists and two steals. Hope Fox added 12 points of her own, caught five rebounds, had three steals and had two assists. In addition, Fox shot 100% from the free-throw line. 

Jillian Martin scored 11 points and was three-for-four from the three-point line, which was a team best for the Owls. Ashley Evans added eight points, a team-best of four blocks an assist against Georgian Court.

Shadaria Smith came into the game in the fourth quarter and instantly made an impact for Southern. Smith scored six points, captured two rebounds and was a perfect 4-4 from the free-throw line. Delaney Haines scored five points and recorded two rebounds on Saturday afternoon. 

Southern had a game-best of 56.25 field goal percentage in the first quarter. The Owls shot 57.14% from the three-point line in the first quarter and shot a game-best of 75% from the free-throw line in the third quarter. Southern had a game-best of 31 bench points and seven fast-break points against Georgian Court. 

The Owls return to the James Moore Field House to continue the Tip-Off Classic on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 3:30 p.m. against Mercy University.
