SCSU Women's Basketball Tipped By Mercy, 53-43

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball lost to Mercy, 53-43, in a non-conference matchup at the season-opening SCSU Tip-Off Classic. With the loss, Southern dropped to 1-1 on the year while Mercy improved to 2-0.

Delaney Haines scored a team-high 19 points after converting on 5-of-10 from three-point range, and also had four steals. Hope Fox led Southern with 10 rebounds to go along with five assists, three steals and three points while Ashley Evans had eight points. Katie Williamson also finished with six points, six rebounds and four assists.

Mercy used a 7-0 run to open the game to set the pace for the remainder of the contest as they led for the entire game. The Knights led at the break, 29-19.

In the second half, Southern cut into Mercy's lead by outscoring the Knights, 11-7, over the last seven minutes of the third quarter and got within six points. The Owls outscored Mercy for the period, 13-10, with Haines (6 pts.) and Evans (5 pts.) leading the way.

Haines scored eight of the Owls' 11 points in the fourth quarter, giving her 14 for the second half, but it was a 9-for-26 showing over the game's final 20 minutes that ultimately did the Owls in.

Southern will look to bounce back on Wednesday, Nov. 15 when they travel to Worcester, Mass. to open Northeast-10 Conference play against No. 6/7 Assumption at 5:30 p.m.
