SCSU Men's Basktball Tops Georgian Court, 91-74, For Fourth-Straight Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball rolled to a 91-74 non-conference win at Georgian Court for their fourth-straight victory. The Owls improved to 7-2 overall while GCU dropped to 1-8 on the year.

Kazell Stewart led Southern with 21 points after shooting a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor and converting 7-of-10 from the three-point line. Stewart also grabbed five rebounds and had two blocks and two steals. The third-year Owl has been on a tear over his last three games averaging 18.3 points while shooting 80% (20-25) from the floor with 7.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game. Josh McGettigan chipped in 17 pooints with five boards while Marty Silver had nine points, eight assists, six rebounds and four steals. Sean James tallied nine points on three, three-pointers and Cherif Diarra had eight points, six rebounds and a pair of blocks.

The Owls dominated the first half, outscoring Georgian Court, 50-27, over the game's first 20 minutes. After opening with a 6-0 run to start the game, Georgian Court hung with the Owls, pulling to within a basket, 15-13, with 12:46 to go. Both team's went back-and-forth, with Georgian Court pulling within eight with 5:26 to go, but Southern closed the first half with a 15-0 run over the remaining of the frame to head to halftime with a 50-27 lead.

The second half saw the Owls hold onto their lead despite a push from GCU and never trailed by fewer than 13 points in the second half. After the Lions made the score 68-53 with 9:07 to play, the Owls clamped down and outscored GCU, 25-21, over the remainder of the game.

For the game, Southern shot 54.9% (28-51) from the floor and converted 27 free throws on its way to its fourth-straight victory. The difference in the game came on 29 points off of 17 GCU turnovers in the game.
Southern returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 19 when it hosts Holy Family for a special matinee game at 2 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
