ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated Molloy University, 60-59 in a close non-conference matchup on Tuesday night. Southern improved to an overall record of 5-5 and an NE10 record of 2-3, while Molloy dropped to an overall record of 3-8 and a conference record of 1-3. The Owls extended their streak to three wins in their past four games.
Both teams scored 12 points each in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Owls scored 19 points to the Lions' 13 points. As a team, Southern shot 7-of-15 and was 75% from the free-throw line. In the third quarter, Molloy pulled away as they scored 22 points total, to take the lead in the game. In the fourth quarter, the Owls came back with a total of 17 points to the Lions' 12 points. It was a battle in the last few minutes between the teams, however, Southern powered through to get the hard-earned victory.
Delaney Haines led the team with 13 points, as she shot 6-for-9 from the floor and had two assists.
Rheyna Steinauer recorded a career-high of 12 points, grabbed a team-best of seven rebounds, had three steals and had an assist.
Hope Fox was everywhere on the court as the sophomore had 11 points, grabbed a team-best of seven rebounds, was 100% from the free-throw line, shot a team-best of 3-for-4 from the three-point line, had three steals and dished out two assists.
Katie Williamson had 10 points, six rebounds and recorded an assist against the Lions.
Jillian Martin and
Makenzie Helms both scored six points. Martin led the team with six assists, four rebounds, three steals and made two three-pointers. Helms shot 100% from the free-throw line, had an assist and a rebound against Molloy.
Ashley Evans had a team-best of three blocks, two points, two rebounds and an assist for the Owls.
Southern returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 2:00 p.m. in Orangeburg, N.Y. against Dominican University of New York in a non-conference game.
