SCSU Women's Basketball Tipped by Dominican University, 78-75

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - Southern Connecticut women's basketball closely fell to Dominican University of New York, 78-75, in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. Southern dropped to an overall record of 5-6 and Dominican improved to an overall record of 3-8. 

The Owls came ready to play in the first quarter with 28 points scored. Southern shot a game-best of 64.7% in the first quarter alone. However, the Lions scored 16 points in the second quarter to Southern's 15 points. In the third quarter, Dominican began their come back with 26 points over the Owls. In the fourth quarter, the Lions took the lead as Southern inched closer to their opponent's lead. With time ticking down, the Owls fought hard to send the game to overtime but Dominican held on to get the victory over Southern. 

Katie Williamson led the team with 18 points, as she shot 7-for-10 from the floor. Williamson had a team-best of two blocks, two rebounds and was 100% from the free-throw line. Renza Milner recorded 13 points, four rebounds and shot a team-best 5-for-6 from the floor. 

Julianna Bonilla had 11 points, with a team-best of two three-pointers, four assists, a team-best of two steals, two rebounds and a team-best of two blocks. In addition, Bonilla was 100% from the free-throw line for the Owls. 

Rheyna Steinauer had 10 points, shot 4-for-5 from the floor, grabbed a team-best of seven rebounds, had a steal and a block. Makenzie Helms scored eight points, had a team-best of six assists and had a steal against the Lions. 

Ashley Evans had six points, two rebounds and two assists for the Owls. Jillian Martin scored five points, had three rebounds and three assists. 

Southern returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 5:30 p.m. in a NE10 matchup against Saint Anselm College in the James Moore Field House for their first game of 2024.
