SCSU Women's Basketball Defeats Saint Anselm, 62-42

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated Saint Anselm, 62-42, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improved to 6-6 overall and 3-3 in the NE10 while Saint Anselm dropped to 5-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The Owls have now won four of its last five games.

Makenzie Helms had her top-scoring game as an Owl, totaling 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor while also adding a 3-for-4 night from the free throw line. Jillian Martin filled the box score for the Owls, totaling 10 points and game-highs with six assists and four steals. Delaney Haines also totaled 10 for the Owls while Katie Williamson had six points, six rebounds and three assists.

The Owls led for the entire game and used a 19-12 edge through the first quarter to take a 29-24 lead into the half. The second quarter saw Southern hit a lull as they converted on just 4-of-17 in the second frame. After Saint Anselm pulled within three with a minute to play, a Hope Fox layup with 21 seconds remaining pushed Southern's lead back to five.

In the third, Southern used a 7-2 run, keyed by four points from Williamson, to take a 10-point lead with 5:20 to play in the quarter. Helms then scored five of the Owls final 12 points of the quarter to give Southern a 47-36 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of play. In the fourth, Helms scored eight down the stretch as Southern outscored the Hawks, 15-6, to seal the win at home.

Southern returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 6 when it hosts Saint Michael's for a NE10 titl at 1:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
