NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated the University of Bridgeport, 57-50 in a non-conference matchup in the James Moore Field House on Saturday afternoon. The Owls improved to an overall record of 4-5, with an NE10 record of 2-3. The Purple Knights dropped to an overall record of 2-7, with an CACC record of 1-0.
Southern started off the game with 17 points in the first quarter. In the second quarter, it was Bridgeport that had 13 points compared to the Owls' 11 points. However, going into the third quarter, Southern knew that had to come back and they came out of the locker room, ready to go. In the second half, the Owls only allowed 15 points from the Purple Knights. Southern outscored their opponent, 23-9 in the third and 12-6, in the fourth quarter, to get the hard-earned victory.
Katie Williamson scored a team-best of 19 points, while shooting 7-for-15 from the floor, made five free-throws, grabbed five rebounds, led the team with two blocks and had a steal.
Julianna Bonilla recorded 11 points, she shot a team-best of three three-pointers in the third quarter alone. In addition, Bonilla grabbed three rebounds and dished out an assist against Bridgeport.
Jillian Martin had eight points, eight rebounds, three assists, a steal and was 2-for-4 from the three-point line.
Makenzie Helms had five points, led the team in assists and rebounds with five assists and nine rebounds, had a steal and a block.
Renza Milner and
Rheyna Steinauer both had four points. Milner had four rebounds and three assists. Steinauer had a rebound and was 2-for-2 from the floor.
Hope Fox and
Delaney Haines had three points, as Fox grabbed six rebounds. Haines had an assist and an rebound against Bridgeport.
Southern returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 19 at 5:00 p.m. at Molloy University in Rockville Centre, N.Y. for a non-conference matchup.
