SCSU Men's Basketball Falls To Franklin Pierce, 76-73

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball lost to Franklin Pierce, 76-73, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. The loss drops the Owls to 16-10 overall and 10-7 in conference play while the Ravens improved to 15-10 overall and 10-8 in the NE10.

Cherif Diarra (Queens, N.Y.) posted his fourth double-double of the season after grabbing a career-best 15 rebounds while also scoring 13 points. Diarra was 6-for-10 from the floor and also contributed three assists. Sean James (West Hartford, Conn.) led the Owls with 17 points while Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) added 13 points. Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) totaled 12 points and five assists.

With Franklin Pierce holding an early lead and the Owls trailing, 10-7, Southern used an 11-0 run to take an 18-10 lead with 14:23 to play in the first half. Franklin Pierce countered with a 12-4 run to tie the game at 22-22. Southern then outscored Franklin Pierce, 9-1, to take a 31-23 lead with 7:12 to play. Southern held onto the lead to head into half with a 43-33 advantage. Meanwhile, the Owls offense was completely balanced as four plays had eight points and a fifth had nine.

Leading by 10 to start the half, Franklin Pierce got it down to four points, 45-41, before three James jumpers pushed the Owls lead back to nine. Trailing 55-49, Franklin Pierce scored six unanswered points to the game with 9:08 to play. Logan Bagshaw (Cumberland, Me.) knocked down the second of his two three-pointers in the game to give the Owls the lead, 58-55. Franklin Pierce countered with a 9-0 run to take a 64-58 lead with 5:15 left in the game.

Southern was able to get the game to within one possession but three free throws and a breakaway dunk by the Ravens distanced the Owls from closing the game in the final minute of play.

Southern will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 18 when it travels to American International for its final regular season road game of the year. The Owls will then host Assumption for Senior Night on Tuesday, Feb. 21 with the season finale set for a 7:30 p.m. start.
