SCSU Men's Basketball Falls To Assumption, 87-81

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball lost to Assumption, 87-81, in the final regular season game of the 2022-23 season. With the loss, the Owls will head into the NE10 Tournament, set to begin with First Round games on Friday, Feb. 24, with a record of 17-11 overall and 11-9 in conference play while Assumption improves to 14-13 overall and 10-10 in the NE10.



Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) scored a team-leading, and season-high, 26 points highlighted by a 5-of-7 display from three-point range. Zack Penn (New Hartford, Conn.) posted his sixth double-double of the season with 16 pints and 12 rebounds. Sean James (East Hartford, Conn.) totaled 12 points while Marty Silvera (Worcester, Mass.) finished with seven assists and five steals.

Coleman and Penn led the Owls on Senior Night, signaling the duos final regular-season game at James Moore Field House. The Owls have another opportunity on their home court when they host a NE10 Tournament First Round game at home. Coleman, Penn and Alex Lin, also honored on Senior Night, combined for the Owls' first 21 points, with Penn scoring 12 points in the game's opening minutes.

Coleman scored 11 in the first half, but did the majority of scoring in keeping the Owls within striking distance in the second half. The Owls' senior dropped in 15 in the second half, while James provided nine down the stretch.

The Owls couldn't overcome a scorching hot shooting Assumption team that shot a blistering 57.7% (30-52) from the floor including an 11-for-22 day from three-point range. The Greyhounds also benefited from a 16-for-23 showing at the free throw line.

Southern will open tournament play as the No. 5 seed in the tournament and will host No. 12 seed Saint Rose on Friday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
