No. 5 SCSU Men's Basketball Falls To No. 4 New Haven In NE10 Quarterfinals

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball lost to New Haven, 75-59, in the Northeast 10 Conference Quarterfinals at Charger Gymnasium in West Haven, Conn. Southern drops to 18-12 on the year while New Haven improved to 19-9. 

Owls senior Ulyen Coleman (Brockton, Mass.) finished with a team-high 19 points while Sean James (West Hartford, Conn.) had 13 points and three assists. Cherif Diarra (Queens, N.Y.) had eight points and eight rebounds.

New Haven led by as many as 13 points in the first half, 34-21, thanks to an 11-for-15 start from the floor including 5-of-6 from the outside. UNH's Ty Perry led the Chargers with 12 points, all coming from long range on 4-for-4 shooting from the outside. Trailing by 13, the Owls outscored New Haven, 13-4, on the final 7:36 of the half to head into the break down by just four points, 38-34. On the other end of the court, the Owls' defense held the Chargers to 3-of-9 shooting in the final eight minutes of the frame.

In the Owls' run, three of their five shots from the floor came from the outside, with Coleman, Silvera and Bagshaw all connecting. It was Bagshaw's three-pointer with 35.9 seconds left that made it a two-point game before Chargers' Quashawn Lane hit a floater at the buzzer to push UNH's lead to two possessions heading into the second half. Coleman led the Owls with 13 points in the first half after four of his last five shots heading into the break.

In the second half, Southern outscored UNH, 10-6, over the games first five minutes, including a 5-0 run, that saw Penn hit a jumper and Coleman tie the game at 44-44 with a three-pointer in front of the Chargers' student section. New Haven responded with an 11-1 run to take a 10-point lead, 58-48, with 8:31 to play. Southern managed to pull within five points at 60-55 with 5:25 to go, but New Haven outscored the Owls 15-6 down the stretch to hold on an advance.

For Southern, James scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half. Coleman's 19 points give him 1,437 for his career which ranks 12th all-time. He also has 202 three-pointers for his career and is the fourth player in program history to reach the 200 three-pointer mark.
