SCSU Baseball Highlights vs. New Haven (Apr. 15, 2023 DHer)

Mike Ferrett was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI in the first game and also drove in the Owls' only run in the second game. He now has eight RBI in the first three games of the series against the Chargers. Connor Goggin was 3-for-4 with two RBI with a two-run homer in the first game, while also going 2-for-3 in the second game. Billy Sullivan had two hits in each game of the doubleheader with three runs scored. Jack Drewry also added a two-run homer in the first game. Nick Guarino improved to 7-1 on the season after spinning a complete game that saw him give up two runs on seven hits.

In the first game, Connor Goggin reached on a base hit with one out in the 2nd inning before Jack Drewry put the Owls on top with a two-run homer that gave Southern a 2-0 lead. In the 4th, Ferrett led off with a single up the middle before Goggin connected for his sixth home run of the season to put the Owls on top, 4-0.

On the mound, Guarino was cruising. The Owls Southpaw gave up just three hits over the first five innings, and didn't allow a runner to reach second base. Guarino sat down nine-straight after getting a lead-off single in the 2nd inning until he gave up a two-out single in the 5th.

It wasn't until the 6th inning before New Haven had a runner in scoring position, and back-to-back doubles accounted for the Chargers first run before a single brought another run home. Guarino back in and retired the final two batters he faced in that inning. In the 7th, he gave up a lead off single before the Owls turned a double play and Guarino worked through the final out.

In the 5th, Sullivan led off with a single and moved to second on an infield groundball before scoring on a double by Ferrett. Ferrett wasn't done as he drove in Sullivan and Eng with a double in the 7th to give Southern a 7-2 lead.

In the second game, Sullivan led off the game with a double to gap before Andrew Eng worked a walk. After both runners moved up into scoring position on a wild pitch, it was Ferrett again with the RBI to give Southern a 1-0 lead.

From there, it was all New Haven as they plated three runs in the 1st and another in the 2nd. With the Owls still in the game, a three-run 6th inning ultimately gave the Chargers the lead and sealed the win.

Southern and New Haven meet again for the final game of their four-game series on Sunday, Apr. 16 at Vieira Field.
