No. 2 SCSU Baseball Topped By No. 3 Pace, 6-4, In NE10 First Round

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball lost to Pace, 6-4, in a Northeast-10 Championship First Round matchup at The Ballpark at SCSU. With the loss, Southern dropped to 29-16 while Pace improved to 30-18 and will advance to the NE10 Semifinals on May 11, 2023 hosted by Le Moyne in Syracuse, N.Y.

Andrew Eng was 2-for-4 with his NE10-leading 13th home run as well as a double, and also reached by walk, his program-record 52nd of the season. Chad Fedeli was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored by Colin Mason drove in two runs. Peter Phillips pitched 5 1/3 shut-down innings in relief as he held the Setters scoreless while giving up two hits in the outing. Billy Sullivan also singled to bring his hitting streak to six games and his on-base streak to 13 straight games.

Eng's 13th homer of the year came with two outs in the bottom of the 1st inning. The Owls centerfielder hit a towering shot dead center to give Southern a 1-0 lead. Eng's 13 homers are the most in a single season since Ryan Geffert clubbed 14 in 2010, while only five players in program history have hit more than 13 in a season.

Pace broke out in the top of the 2nd inning for five runs on six hits to take an early 5-1 lead. Southern responded in the bottom half of the inning with three runs to cut Pace's lead to 5-4. Jack Drewry started the inning with a single through the right side before Derrick Jagello was hit by a pitch. Chad Fedeli then dropped down a bunt to move the runners, but Pace's pitcher's throw was offline and allowed him to reach and Drewry to score from second. After Zach Bedryczuk bunted Jagello and Fedelli over and Billy Sullivan popped up, Mason lined a single through the middle of the infield to score both runners and move the Owls within a run.

After giving up a hit in the 3rd and another in the 4th, Phillips was on cruise control as he sat 12-straight batters before being replaced by Tommy Hughes in the 8th. Pace managed to push another run across in the inning, but an incredible throw by Connor Goggin from left retired Pace's Josh Miller attempting to score from second to end the inning.

After Hughes retired the side in the top of the 9th, Eng led off with a double over the left fielder's head before Pace retired the final three Southern Connecticut batters.

While Southern does not advance in the NE10 Championship tournament, the Owls' NCAA Regional hopes are still alive as they rank No. 2 in the region.
