WEEKLY PREVIEW: SCSU Basketball, Gymnastics In Action This Week

Southern Connecticut basketball's Northeast-10 Conference schedule continues with a home date against American International on Tuesday, Jan. 30 and a road trip to Albany, N.Y. to take on College of Saint Rose on Saturday, Feb. 3. SCSU Gymnastics will head to Durham, N.H. for a head-to-head matchup against University of New Hampshire on Sunday, Feb. 4.

SCSU Men's and Women's Basketball Ticket Information
Southern Connecticut men's and women's basketball tickets will be $7 for adults and $5 for children under 12 and seniors. Owls' fans can purchase tickets here. All SCSU students, staff and faculty are admitted free.

SCSU Women's Basketball took a hard-fought loss against Assumption this past weekend after winning back-to-back games against Franklin Pierce and Adelphi. The Owls enter the week in sixth place in the NE10 standings, just ahead of AIC. Saint Rose is currently tied for second in the conference with a 10-3 conference mark.
 
Notes: Makenzie Helms had a career night against Adelphi as she led the Owls with a career-high of 26 points, while shooting a team-best 7-for-11 from the floor. In addition, she made a team-high 12 free-throws, recorded four assists, grabbed three rebounds and had a steal in a 66-57 win. Against nationally ranked Assumption, Helms led the team once again with 21 points, had a team-best four assists and made seven out of eight free throws in a loss. Makenzie Helms had a combined total of 47 points and was 90.5% from the free-throw line in a 1-1 week for Southern Connecticut … Rheyna Steinauer recorded the first double-double of her career with a team-best of 12 rebounds and had 11 points against Adelphi. Steinauer shot 75% from the free-throw line, recorded three assists, had two blocks, led the team with two steals and made a team-best of two three-pointers in a 66-57 win at Adelphi … Katie Williamson led the team and had a career-high of 21 points, while grabbing four rebounds, shot 100% from the free-throw line and shot 58.8% from the floor in a loss against nationally ranked Assumption … Williamson averages team-highs in points (11.3), rebounds (6.6) and blocks (0.9) per game … Jillian Martin is averaging six points and a team-high 4.2 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

Southern looks to bounce back from two-straight losses when it hosts American International on Tuesday, Jan. 30. The Owls enter the week with a record of 6-7 in NE10 play and sit in seventh place while the Yellow Jackets are 5-8 in 10th place. Saint Rose is tied with AIC at 5-8.
 
Notes: In two games last, Kazell Stewart averaged 15.5 points and 8.0 rebounsd per game to go along with two blocks per contest. Against Adelphi, Stewart had 10 points, eight rebounds and a block. Against Assumption, he had a team-high 21 points, eight rebounds and three blocks … For the year, Stewart is averaging 13.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game as well as a team-high 1.7 blocks per contest … Josh McGettigan leads the Owls with 18.2 points while also grabbing 7.1 rebounds per game and slashing .483/.404/.780 … Marty Silvera is averaging 12 points, 6.5 assists, 2.4 steals and 4.2 rebounds per game … Sean James posted back-to-back double-digit games last weekend while hitting on 5-of-10 from three-point range for the week … Cherif Diarra also leads the team with 9.0 rebounds per game while averaging 7.8 points and 1.5 blocks per game.

SCSU Gymnastics heads to Durham, N.H. to take on University of Hampshire on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. The Owls are coming off a 191.100 performance in a tri-meet at Brown with Alaska-Anchorage.
 
Notes: At Brown, The Owls saw some impressive performances in all their events. On the balance beam, junior Libby Allen matched her career-best and posted the highest score of the day for Southern Connecticut with a score of 9.750 and came in second place overall. In the floor exercise, junior Alexa Melanson recorded a team-best score of 9.700. On the vault, both senior Hanna Zebdi and junior Brianna Dorr recorded a team-best score of 9.725. On the uneven/parallel bars, senior Jayci Jordan recorded a team-best score of 9.725 and came in second place. The vault was the Owls' highest scoring event, as they recorded a score of 48.350.
