SCSU Women's Basketball Beats Saint Michael's, 65-50, for Second-Straight Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated Saint Michael's, 65-50 in an NE10 matchup at the James Moore Field House on Saturday afternoon. Southern improved to an overall record of 7-6 and an NE10 record of 4-3 while Saint Michael's dropped to an overall record of 4-9 and an NE10 record of 0-7. 
 


The Owls started off the game with 11 points over the Purple Knights' seven points in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Saint Michael's recorded 11 points to the Owls' 10 points going into half. In the third quarter, Southern pulled away with 26 points as Saint Michael's inched closer to their lead. In the fourth quarter, Southern worked hard to get the win against the Purple Knights. 

Katie Williamson had another double-double of the season as she led the team with 12 points and a career-best of 18 rebounds. In addition, the forward had two assists, one block and was 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Makenzie Helms had 10 points, three rebounds and an assist against the Purple Knights.

Julianna Bonilla and Jillian Martin both had nine points each for the Owls. Bonilla led the team with three blocks, three assists, grabbed four rebounds, a steal and made a team-best of two three-pointers. Martin led the team in assists with eight, grabbed seven rebounds and was a team-best of 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Ashley Evans and Delaney Haines both scored six points against Saint Michael's. Evans recorded a block, had an assist and had a rebound. Haines shot 66.7% from the three-point line and had an assist for the Owls. Rheyna Steinauer was one of the team leaders in rebounds with five of her own. 

The Owls return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 10 against Elm-City rival, the University of New Haven at 5:30 p.m. in West Haven, Conn.
