Weekly Preview: Gymnastics Opens 2024 Season, Swimming & Diving Host Two Meets, Basketball On The Road

Southern Connecticut State University men's and women's swimming & diving host a pair of dual meets, men's and women's basketball are on the road and gymnastics open the 2024 season also on the road.
 
Hutchinson Natatorium will be hopping on Friday, Jan. 12 and Sunday, Jan. 14. Swimming and Diving hosts Bentley on Friday at 1 p.m. and Saint Rose on Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday is also Senior Day for the Owls, with pregame ceremonies set to honor the Owls' graduating seniors.
 
The Connecticut delegation of the Northeast-10 Conference meetup on Wednesday, Jan. 10 when Southern Connecticut heads to UNH for a midweek, conference matchup. The women tip-off at 5:30 p.m. while the men play at 7:30 p.m. in West Haven, Conn. The Owls will then travel to Manchester, N.H. to take on Southern New Hampshire on Saturday, Jan. 13.
 
SCSU Gymnastics open the 2024 season on Saturday, Jan. 13 when it travels to Piscataway, N.J. to compete in the Rutgers January Quad Meet featuring host Rutgers, Oregon State and Utica at 2 p.m.

Southern enters the week with a record of 7-6 overall including a 4-3 mark in the NE10 Conference. The Owls won both NE10 games last week against Saint Anselm, 62-42, and Saint Michael's, 65-50. The Owls have also won five of its last six games.
 
Notes: Makenzie Helms earned NE10 Honor Roll accolades on Monday, Jan. 8. Helms had her top-scoring game as an Owl, totaling 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor while also adding a 3-for-4 night from the free throw line in a win over Saint Anselm. Also, the guard was one of the team leaders once again in points with 10 of her own, she grabbed three rebounds and had an assist in a win against Saint Michael's … For the year, Helms is averaging 8.0 points and 3.2 assist per game … Katie Williamson leads the Owls with 11.5 points per game as well as 7.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per contest. Williamson torched Saint Michael's with 12 points and 18 rebounds for her second double-double of the season … Delaney Haines is averaging 8.3 points per game … Jillian Martin had a near triple-double against Saint Michael's with nine points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Martin's eight assists were a season-best. For the year, she is averaging 6.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists.

Southern saw a seven-game winning streak come to an end against first-place Saint Michael's on Saturday and hope to start another streak at New Haven and Southern New Hampshire this week.
 
Notes: In a 1-1 week, Josh McGettigan averaged a team-high 22.5 points with 8.0 rebounds. Against Saint Anselm in a 86-75 win, McGettigan had 17 points and eight rebounds. Against Saint Michael's, McGettigan posted 28 points with eight boards … For the year, McGettigan ranks among the conference leaders with 19.1 points per game, as well as 6.9 rebounds per contest while slashing .526/.408/.814 … Kazell Stewart is averaging 13.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game while also leading the team with 1.6 blocks per contest … Marty Silvera checks-in with 12.2 points and 6.9 assists per game as well as 2.5 steals and 4.8 rebounds per contest … Cherif Diarra is averaging a team-high 9.2 rebounds per game, including 3.4 on the offensive end, with 1.5 blocks per contest while averaging 8.7 points per game.

SCSU men's and women's swimming is back in action – for the first time in the New Year and since its last competition on Dec. 8 – when it hosts Bentley on Friday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. The Owls will then welcome Saint Rose on Sunday, Jan.14 at 1 p.m. with Senior Day festivities scheduled for prior to the start of the event.
 
Men's Notes: Drew Ladner ranks in the top 10 in the NE10 in several events including 100 Freestyle (48.11), 50 Butterfly (24.32), 200 IM (2:02.73), 400 IM (4:27.77) and 400 Freestyle Relay (3:16.16) … Dylan Prescher ranks in the top 10 in the 500 Free (4:54.10), has the top time in the 1000 Free (10:04.96), 1650 Free (17:00.00), 50 Butterfly (25.55) and the 200 Freestyle (1:47.46) … Lucas Quiroga ranks in the top 10 in the 500 Free (4:45.60), 1000 Freestyle (10.07.11) and 200 Butterfly … Franklin Kuhn also ranks in the top 10 in the 200 Freestyle (1:47.11), 200 Freestyle Relay (1:28.47) and the 100 Freestyle (48.12).
 
Women's Notes: Hailey Nyquist ranks in the top 10 in 11 events among the NE10 leaders including the top time in the 50 Back (27.69) and 100 Back (58.40). She also ranks in the top 10 in the 100 Free (55.71), 200 Free (1:59.32), 500 Free (5:23.15), 200 Back (2:13.11), 100 Fly (59.45), 200 Fly (2:15.39), 200 IM (2:16.64), 200 Medley Relay (1:51.94) and the 400 Medley Relay (4:04.74) …  Arianna Arturi ranks in the top 10 in the NE10 in the 50 Free (25.11), 100 Free (54.57) and the 200 Free (1:58.62) … Paola Castillo ranks in the top 5 in four events including the 1000 Free (11:06.25), 50 Fly (28.40), 100 Fly (1:00.94) and the 200 Fly … Jasmine Uricchio leads the NE10 in the 1000 Free (10:41.92), and ranks in the top 10 in the 100 Fly (1:00.97), 200 Fly (2:10.81), 200 IM (2:15.58), 400 Freestyle Relay (3:47.49), 200 Freestyle (1:58.57), 500 Freestyle (5:14.95).

Notes: The 2022-23 saw the Owls' most success under head coach Byron Knox's leadership as the team qualified for the USA Gymnastics Nationals for the first time since 2009. The Owls placed seven student-athletes on the All-Gymnastics East Conference teams, including GEC Balance Beam Champion Angel Lee. 2023-24 also saw the Owls set all-time program records in all four events while Lee, Lexi Bracher, Ciana Rios and Hannah Stahlbrodt also earned All-American Honors. Additionally, the Owls featured 23 GEC Academic Scholar-Athletes.
