Gray Scores Three Times, Breaks 1,000-Yard Mark As SCSU Football Beats AIC, 50-21

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Southern Connecticut wrapped up the 2024 season with a 50-21 win at American International. With the win, Southern improved to 4-6 overall and 3-5 in the NE10 while AIC dropped to 4-7 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
 
E'Lijah Gray scored three times for the Owls while also totaling 139 yards on 23 carries for a 6.0 yards per carry average. Gray became the first Owls running back to rush for three touchdowns in a game since Jonmichael Bivona accomplished the feat against Franklin Pierce on Oct. 5, 2019. In addition, Gray's 139 yards on the ground give him 1,049 yards for the season, making him the first Owls running since Eli Parks in 2018 to rush for 1,000 yards in a season.

Keith Ridley finished the day with 216 yards passing after completing 20-of-34. Ridley also had a touchdown pass and rushed for an 11-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Ridley wraps up his second season with the Owls with 2,179 yards with 16 touchdown passes and and six rushing touchdowns. For his career, Ridley finishes with 4,417 yards passing with 31 touchdown passes and seven rushing touchdowns.

Luke Gadson had nine catches for 121 yards and a touchdown while Shawn Martin had a 61-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter with the game in hand. Quinten Asiedu led the Owls with six tackles including a sack while Kuhron Walker had five tackles and a sack while also posting three tackles for a loss of 17 yards. Shaun Martin also totaled six tackles and Brayden Ross returned a fumble 15 yards for a touchdown.



Gray scored his first touchdown of the day on the Owls opening drive that saw him great for a 41-yard run on his first carry of the game before scoring from two yards out. After AIC took the lead, 7-6 followed the Owls' missed PAT, Southern rattled off 27 unanswered points.

Ridley's lone touchdown pass came on an eight-yard slant to Gadson that gave Southern a 13-7 lead. The Owls then held AIC on the ensuing drive that was capped by a bad snap to the Yellow Jackets' punter and a rumble recovery by Rossi who carried it in from 15 yards as the Owls took a 19-7 lead. Gray scored on runs of seven and 14 to give Southern a 33-7 lead before AIC scored just before the half to send it to the break, 33-14, Owls.

Coming out of the break, AIC quarterback Connor Dietz broke free on a designed run for 85 yards to cut Southern's lead to 33-21 on the first play of the half. Southern then posted three more points on Daniel Benzi's field goal that finished off a 20-play, 67-yard drive. After a Joenel Figueroa interception – his third of the season – on the next possession, Martin took off on the second play of the Owls' set-of-downs and beat all 11 Yellow Jackets for a 61-yard touchdown.
